After losing his police officer lover, Christian drag queen Holiday Heart (Ving Rhames) meets 12-year-old Niki (Jessika Quynn Reynolds) and her drug-addicted mother, Wanda (Alfre Woodard). Heart finds relief from heartache and a renewed sense of purpose when he steps in as a father figure to Niki and welcomes the two women into his life. Not often in seeing a frequently supporting actor taking the lead, and Ving Rhames's exceptional performance allowed such weight relied onto his shoulders carrying the bold, timelessly humble narrative of unbalanced treatment that still allowed decent performances to fulfill a surprising echo from another classic story. One of my favorite movies, ever. ...absolutely, as another reviewer stated, Ving Rhames can do any role..and Alfre Woodard is gold. Heart-breaking, touching, uplifting, moving, absolute gold. Needs far more attention than it clearly ever garnered.

Great movie, a favorite of mine. Shows what greatness you can find if you look beyond the surface of people! Holiday, a drag queen, is a loyal friend, and a kind person, with a huge heart! Ving Rhames did a great job in this movie, as did Alfre Woodward as an addict.

Watching as he holds his own against no-good, violent men and gun-toting drug dealers is comforting — a salve for those of us, like my younger self, who were trying to find our own inner-strength despite the homophobic naysayers surrounding us.

As much as I enjoyed Ving Rhames' performance, the actors around him were not as strong. If the story was a bit more coherent I would have given it a higher rating but it feels like four stories all in one.
