Critics Consensus

Overloaded with quirk and recycled twists, Holland's impressive style can't paper over a hollow script.

Rather than carefully weaving Coen-esque absurdity with Hitchcockian thrills, it jumps from one to another without care. Go to Full Review

The journey there is worth taking, but it’s hard not to wish that Holland had gone a little madder, or attacked its themes a little harder, rather than building itself such a neat escape route. Go to Full Review

Andrew Sodorski’s script, which has bounced around Hollywood for a decade, has come out a half-baked mess. Cave’s role is to toss a layer of visual irony over it all and hope no one notices. Go to Full Review

But we finally hit a dud with Amazon Prime’s “Holland.” Lest the sight of her preternaturally tight face peeking out from a Dutch cap intrigue you, I must warn you that it’s not very good and it’s actually kind of unpleasant. Go to Full Review

Holland is hardly what we expected from Mimi Cave after her very promising debut, Fresh, especially considering its excellent cast and the strong promise of a mystery thriller that ends up being a bland and dull afternoon movie. [Full Review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Eugenia S @Genka39 6d I live in Michigan. This is not what Holland, Michigan looks like... See more Monica M @cineveritas47 6d I would rather be hit in the head with a dutch shoe daily than to ever recommend anyone watch this movie. Nicole Kidman plays the same weird character she plays in every movie she's ever in. The story line was too predictable and I was very disappointed. See more Raymond A @Raysax Jan 20 The worst movie I’ve seen in years See more Liam D @Mediawatcher2003 Jan 15 Mimi Cave’s follow up to the surprising gem Fresh is one of the most tonally confused movies I’ve ever seen. The script combines hitchocken tension and Coen Brothers dark humour that don’t blend together with the cast (especially an rightfully gonzo Nicole Kidman) trying their best to salvage anything See more Read all reviews
