In this wildly unpredictable thriller, Nicole Kidman is the meticulous Nancy Vandergroot, a teacher and homemaker whose picture-perfect life with her community pillar husband (Matthew Macfadyen) and son (Jude Hill) in tulip-filled Holland, Michigan tumbles into a twisted tale. But we finally hit a dud with Amazon Prime’s “Holland.” Lest the sight of her preternaturally tight face peeking out from a Dutch cap intrigue you, I must warn you that it’s not very good and it’s actually kind of unpleasant.

Holland is hardly what we expected from Mimi Cave after her very promising debut, Fresh, especially considering its excellent cast and the strong promise of a mystery thriller that ends up being a bland and dull afternoon movie. [Full Review in Spanish]

Ultimately, Holland is a bold second feature for Mimi Cave, who proves herself a talented director. While the script falters and some of the period details don’t quite land, the film is still a chilling, suspenseful ride.

Mimi Cave’s follow up to the surprising gem Fresh is one of the most tonally confused movies I’ve ever seen. The script combines hitchocken tension and Coen Brothers dark humour that don’t blend together with the cast (especially an rightfully gonzo Nicole Kidman) trying their best to salvage anything
