Critics Consensus

More than a movie star murder mystery, Hollywoodland takes it slow in order to reveal the intriguing details of the rise and fall of superstar fame.

Jacob B Just in time for James Gunn's Superman, I decided to focus on something different related to the legendary superhero rather than something like the Lois & Clark TV show that everyone on my YouTube recommendations is blabbing about. Without further ado, my review of Hollywoodland: Part biopic, part murder mystery gunning for the "Unsolved Mysteries" demographic, Hollywoodland's lack of closure was understandably alienating to viewers. However, I still think it's overall a flawed-but-good film. The two plots sometimes feel like they're trying to upstage the other in terms of getting peoples' attention but the film more than makes up for it with strong performances - most notably, the career-resurrecting one of the man who would go on to play Batman as the man who played Superman back in the '50s* - , a decent job capturing a few parallels with the Adrien Brody detective and George Reeves, a well-written screenplay that results in dialogue that's certainly not boring and showing how Hollywood isn't always glamorous. A melancholy film about how some careers don't always go the way people want them to...and also arguably a better Superman-focused film than the actual, blockbuster Superman film that came out in 2006. *And he slept with Martha Kent, too! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/07/25 Full Review Georgan G 3.25 stars. This sad story is hard to watch. Ambition & expectations can make or break a life. We'll never know the real end to this actor's life. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/20/24 Full Review Eye C This is the best performance from Affleck as an actor. Great thriller, sad story and intriguing truth. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/17/24 Full Review Test T It's not that there's anything wrong with it, but this film feels far too serious and ordinary to be entertaining. It could be because the story is about issues within the film industry, and is trying to be objective. I'm not sure what I was expecting from a film about a suicide, but I did not enjoy this. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/06/23 Full Review donnie m i WANTED to keep watching but the gum chewing of Adrien Brody drove me crazy and he's overly dramatic in EVERYTHING he says and does-even the way he walks and worst acting i've seen for Ben Affleck who's trying to sound like Jimmy Stewart Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/07/23 Full Review Gareth v This is an overly complicated murder mystery that lacks one thing. A mystery. In the end it's a bit of a dull and lacklustre affair. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 06/19/23 Full Review Read all reviews
