      Critics Consensus

Mesmerizingly strange and willfully perverse, Holy Motors offers an unforgettable visual feast alongside a spellbinding -- albeit unapologetically challenging -- narrative.

Jerod S Guy in a limo drives around and performs different roles around Paris. Not sure how they're connected. Not sure what the point was. Not worth trying to figure out, either. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/21/24 Full Review Audience Member Holy motors was a surreal experience, much different than anything else I’ve seen. Very original movie that I’d recommend to anyone who enjoys weird, foreign language films. Not quite 5 stars because it did drag on just a bit. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/12/23 Full Review Gbor G Twisted, in a good way. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/23/24 Full Review Toby B It's a perfect visual, textural, emotional experience. Funny and evocative and great. What movies should be. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/27/22 Full Review allen h Weird. Sucks you in. Don't know that it's good but it is interesting Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member So this is supposedly an ode to cinema, and each vignette is done in a different style or genre. But, to be honest, I almost missed that while watching it, because it is just so completely bonkers. On the other hand, it doesn’t feel weird just for the sake of being weird. It is absolutely mad, but you have to admire Carax’ vision, and the ability (willingness?) of Denis Lavant to wholeheartedly inhabit that vision. Robert Levin Newsday You'll either run with it or you won't, but you can be sure you've never seen anything quite like it. Rated: 3/4 Apr 29, 2020 Full Review Ginette Vincendeau Sight & Sound The film makes up for... lapses with dazzling moments. Apr 29, 2020 Full Review Mick LaSalle San Francisco Chronicle Cinema is full, life is empty. Cinema is easy, life is mysterious. Perhaps that's Carax's message. Whatever it is, he has our attention.
