Critics Consensus

Screenwriter Vince Gilligan's mordant sense of humor strikes a discordant note in Home Fries, a romantic caper full of empty calories.

LaShana C Fun movie that includes fast food. I didn't eat during the viewing but you should and you will have some humorous laughter along the way! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/22/23 Full Review kevin w Quirky romcom about a small-town woman (Drew Barrymore) who falls for a helicopter pilot, a pilot whose family just so happens to want to kill the woman. Catherine O'Hara as the mother of the family subversively steals the film and the attention - excepting Barrymore's curiously distracting Shirley Temple hairstyle - as a particularly delicious if slimy piece of work, while Luke Wilson turns in another competent role as a helpless guy caught in larger machinations than he can handle (perhaps his forte and his niche). A decent soundtrack fills the background until the couple learns what we knew from their first meeting. Perhaps an over-the-top story, but one that is certainly not typical of the genre thereby setting it apart. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review steve d I didn't find the characters or story engaging in the least. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member I liked the first 30 minutes or so of the movie; I thought this movie's plot had a promising start. Once the romance is introduced though, it gets really dull and uninteresting, not to mention it also felt LONG (it's less than 100 minutes and it felt like 2 hrs). Drew Barrymore and Catherine O'Hara were ok, but I thought Luke Wilson was bland. And the ending has some seriously awkward implications. 4/10 Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member Sally (Drew Barrymore): I've always dreamed of being a big hit singer. Dorian (Luke Wilson): Oh, can you sing? Sally (Drew Barrymore): No, that's why they call them dreams. This was darker than I expected for a comedy but interesting plot. I like quirky films like this and you know its quirky when the cast includes Jake Busey (has that guy ever played a "normal" role?). This was pretty entertaining enough. I love Drew Barrymore, she's always such a cutie-pie. Who remembered Luke Wilson being so good-looking? Wow he was hot in this film. But much of the film's kudos goes to Catherine O'Hara she was an absolute card, so understated but so hilarious. I love her! Everything else was alright but still an interesting little flick. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member "Home Fries" is a splendid movie to me!!! Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Read all reviews
