Brad Wheeler Globe and Mail With her narrative feature debut, the documentary filmmaker Rama Rau offers an edgier after-school special that is nevertheless worth seeing for Stone alone. Rated: 2.5/4 Sep 18, 2019 Full Review Joey Keogh Vague Visages Rau's film... is more concerned with providing a scuzzy but always well-meaning day-in-the-life look at someone in a horrible situation than providing any easy answers to how she'll get out of it. Dec 3, 2020 Full Review Kevin Jagernauth The Playlist An authentically lived-in and hard-won tale of survival. Rated: B Nov 13, 2020 Full Review Jared Mobarak The Film Stage [The film isn't] about piling on the tragedy or sweeping her trauma under the rug for some unrealistic rebirth in the aftermath. It's about growing, healing, and hope. Rated: B Nov 9, 2020 Full Review Luke Y. Thompson Films Gone Wild To the extent that there's joy to be had in this rough story, it's in seeing world-weary Natalie effortlessly manipulate the high school's would-be bad boys who think they're hardcore Oct 19, 2020 Full Review Norman Wilner NOW Toronto Honey Bee doesn't break new ground for this sort of drama, but it distinguishes itself in its slow accumulation of small moments. Audience Member This movie so underrated. It deserves so much credit for all the effort and the story line put into this movie. This generation deserves more movies like these. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review dave d 'Honey Bee' was a film I wanted to like a lot. It has Martha Plimpton for crying out loud. Unfortunately, a movie that borders on a world that is very dangerous was portrayed as kinda ok, and then really horrible. Rama Rau flirts, but never really gives the viewer a profound reason to root for our underaged prostitute. We get very little back story and there are sudden tonal shifts that just make the film even more unrealistic. At its heart there's some fine acting (and some not so fine), but overall it's frustrating. Julia Sarah Stone is so perfectly cast. Despite being well older than her supposed 16, she's committed to the character. The third act is uneven and muddled, yet we're left with not a whole heck of a lot resolved. It's a mixed bag. Final Score: 5/10 Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Raw and gripping tale of tragedy and rejection with a glimmer of hope for salvation, with an amazing soundtrack to export.
