Jim Schembri jimschembri.com A caustically witty, bitter-sweet, funny-sad case study of a Millennial woman going through a quarter-life crisis so intense it would make a therapist scream for bottle of vodka and a straw. (Includes interview with director) Rated: 4/5 Oct 14, 2020 Full Review Harris Dang Impulse Gamer Overall, the quality of Hot Mess is thankfully unlike its title. It is a wonderful comedy that provides a great showcase for writer/director Lucy Coleman and her lead actress, Sarah Gaul. Highly recommended. Rated: 4/5 Sep 23, 2020 Full Review Andrew F. Peirce The Curb If there were any justice, Hot Mess would be on everyone's radar, earning a wealth of accolades and raging up the box office, but the Australian film industry doesn't work that way and gosh is it beyond frustrating. I love this film. Apr 4, 2020 Full Review Stephen Saito Moveable Fest Gaul is completely disarming as Loz, a joy to watch untangling everything that's going on in her head at any given moment... Audience Member This movie is extremely relatable and down to earth. I loved every moment including the awkward and cringe moments that everyone has experienced in their own lives at least once. Definitely recommend a watch. Plus the Writer and Director Lucy is amazing and very talented. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member The saving grace of this awful movie was the fact that Dave didn't actually end up with Loz. Aside from the idea that a good looking tradie would ever actually hook up with the 25 (but looks 35) year old Loz in the first place, the whole plot was actually quite realistic. An aging arts student who lives at home with her parents worries that she will end up alone in an apartment with nobody to comfort her but her cats. Her friends are equally disagreeable, especially the slutty blonde one who talks about rimming her boss. She produces 'art' that nobody aside from other pseudointellectual arts students would enjoy and is enraged by the fact that her mentor rejects her toiler humour poetry, delusionally thinking it's because he's a sexist. When Dave ghosts her after the classic 'root and boot', she rejects the sensible idea of moving away from the city to start a family in favour of following her passion of writing awful songs, like an aspiring Demi Lardner, but somehow even more annoying. There was basically no character development of anyone in the film except Loz, and even that was poor. Why couldn't they have cast someone easier to look at? I think viewers would be much more likely to feel sorry for her if Loz was cast as a cute girl rather than the dumpy aging loser they chose instead. Thank God there was really only one type of shot used for the whole film and it didn't often include full body shots or close-ups. Anyway, I hope this dreaful movie is soon forgotten and maybe the Australian movie industry can just pretend it never happened. The only reason I watched it was because it was one of only 5 Australian films shown on an overnight Qantas flight. I can't sleep on planes.
