Critics Consensus

Anna Faris is game, but she can't salvage this middling, formulaic comedy.

Birithivy Y The House Bunny - 7/10. I needed a comedy to watch, and a couple of people recommended watching this film. I’m surprised it took me a long time to watch this, considering that I’m a fan of Farris, Stone, and Dennings. I miss movies like this: silly, cliched, over the top, and just lacking in realism but filled with cheesy heart. The 90’s and 00’s were rife with films like this, and it seems like they just don’t make movies like this anymore. We’ve also failed Anna Faris as a star, because she’s such a good comedic actress. I get it that she made it big with the Scary Movie franchise, but her solo career post those movies should’ve been bigger. Technically, this movie was a hit, but it really should have made more money in the box office. The House Bunny is your typical fish out of water story. But here, the fish is able to help open and change the minds of the people she meets, and in turn, they help open and change her mind as well. Surprisingly though, even through this Sandler produced product, we get interesting commentary towards our views on beauty and how it affects perception on others. There’s moments in this film where a simple joke actually ends up being very philosophical and heart touching (I’m not kidding). And just like in the movie Accepted, we get a last minute speech which is supposed to be a slightly funny speech, but ends up being a well written and actually deep message. I miss movies like this. They’re not perfect, but they do pass the time and make you remember that comedies could just be plain old fun! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/26/24 Full Review James E Decently funny with a cute but basic message about self acceptance. Easy for a mindless couple hours Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/23/24 Full Review Patrick F This is an okay comedy. The story itself is lame. It could have used several more drafts of the script. The film has a talented cast including Anna Faris, Emma Stone, Kat Dennings, Beverly D'Angelo, and Chris McDonald. Unfortunately, D'Angelo and McDonald don't factor into the story enough. The film feels like a studio ordered a zany college comedy with hot girls and didn't care about the script. The characters aren't memorable, there is no great development for any of them. The growth we do see from the characters is rushed and feels unearned. Anna Faris carried the movie and her style of comedy is the only thing that really landed throughout the film. It has its moments and is okay, but it's not a film worth watching a second time. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/13/24 Full Review Gabe W It's a happy Madison production all these movies in another 10 ,15 years are gonna be cult classics. They all have some sort of Quirky funny sense to them and there just amazing Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/09/24 Full Review Larry K Some funny parts but was not that good Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/08/24 Full Review The H a not so bad chick flick Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/28/24 Full Review Read all reviews
