Critics Consensus

There's an abundance of gore in this derivative horror movie, but little sense or wit.

Ed Gonzalez Slant Magazine Rob Zombie's House of 1000 Corpses has nostalgia on its side but not much else. Rated: 2/4 Apr 28, 2014 Full Review Jamie Russell BBC.com A tour-de-farce of depressing inanity, that's unable to do anything more than offer a messy, incoherent pastiche of other, better movies. Rated: 1/5 Sep 30, 2003 Full Review Daniel Fienberg L.A. Weekly Zombie wants his film to be gleefully demented, but he fails to grasp that loud, inbred evil people torturing stupid, grating benign people isn't disturbing as much as tedious. Apr 25, 2003 Full Review David Day Horror Movie Talk It seems like Rob saw films like Texas Chainsaw, Halloween, and Salem’s Lot, as a child and wondered to himself, “What goes on in the parts of these movies that I don’t get to see? Rated: 2/10 Sep 23, 2025 Full Review Patrick Cavanaugh The Wolfman Cometh Works best as a fun way to get into the Halloween spirit, but is otherwise a derivative mixtape of Zombie's biggest influences. Rated: 3/5 Sep 9, 2025 Full Review May Leitz Nyx Fears Even if it's not a great movie, I wish every horror movie were more like this movie. We'd all have a lot more fun come Halloween, squirming in a chair like we're meant to. Mar 19, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Uriel Film is just to fun watch Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/21/23 Full Review Johnny R Great movie. The critics seem to be looking for a reason these guys are evil and killers. Sometimes there is no reason and they are just evil. And with that one of the few movies out there that I find really creepy since you could imagine it happening. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/06/25 Full Review Maksim S House of 1000 Corpses clearly worships at the altar of Texas Chainsaw Massacre — the dusty backroads, the deranged family, the descent into rural nightmare mythology. But where Chainsaw built terror through restraint and implication, Rob Zombie goes for psychedelic gore, loud chaos, and carnival-horror energy. It’s colorful, loud, and proudly stitched from the flesh of ’70s and ’80s exploitation films. The problem isn’t ambition — the film is bursting with style, references, and enthusiasm — but execution. Its characters posture instead of breathe, its menace feels forced, and the shock rarely lands because the film doesn’t earn quiet dread first. It’s all scream, no suffocation. The homage is affectionate, but overworked; it tries to be iconic without ever feeling inevitable. A curiosity for horror devotees and aesthetic enthusiasts, but ultimately a noisy echo of a far more primal masterpiece. It wants to haunt — instead, it hustles. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/02/25 Full Review John W The special art style makes this film unique, but fails to deliver any atmosphere. Also some weird acting in a more or less forgettable story. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/22/25 Full Review Tyler D A childhood favorite and loved the opportunity to see the movie in theaters but the movie definitely showed it age on the big screen Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/22/25 Full Review Liam D Apart from Sid Haig‘s truly scene stealing performance. Rob Zombie’s directorial debut and the beginning of the firefly trilogy is all of his elements at their worst; unpleasant, obnoxious and noisy.
