Architect Newton Davis (Steve Martin) is distraught when his girlfriend, Becky (Dana Delany), spurns his proposal and refuses to move into the lavish house he designed for her. Davis, who cannot imagine himself living alone in the house, shares his tale of woe with Gwen (Goldie Hawn), a dishonest waitress he thinks doesn't speak English. Complications arise when Davis, on the brink of reconciliation with Becky, discovers that Gwen has moved into the couple's soon-to-be dream home.

Rather than engaging Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn in an escalating game of "yes, and?," "Housesitter" is a rather straightforward confection. It could be called a throwback to madcap 1940s comedy were it able to muster a modicum of that momentum.

A light-hearted movie. Goldie Hawn plays her role very seamlessly, and the movie is really about her character, Gwen. Davis had proposed to Becky a year ago, after having built a house for both of them in their hometown. She promptly declined the proposal, and the house sits vacant since then as he lives in Boston. Davis one day meets Gwen at a restaurant where she works as a waitress; soon after, Gwen reveals that she has a plan for the house. The premise of the movie is that now that Gwen enters the picture, there will be a romantic triangle to keep us entertained. However, the relationships between the three are not very executed. We know that we are asked to be wondering who David gets with but in reality his relationship with either of them is so lukewarm.., In no moment, Davis appears more in love with any of them or more in love with one than with the other. If anything. Becky is better at displaying her feelings towards Davis. The chemistry between Gwen and Davis is good as actors but not as lovers. But all this doesn’t make much of a difference because this is a fairytale and the end is very predictable. The movie is really about Glenn, and the driving force of her fantasies. And it has great comedic scenes.

This is a fantastic movie. Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn at their best. I have no idea why it is rated so poorly. It is lovely, no r-rated jokes or raunchy yuck, just a Capraesque comedy classic. Just as good as Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, which was also excellent.
