Audience Member How To Kill A Finch I have just watched the movie "How to Kill a Mockingbird". It was a condensed dramatic version of the novel by the same name, but still managed to put the big picture together. It accurately depicted the racist attitudes of southern white men against black people during the 1930s. "How to Kill a Mockingbird" takes place in Maycomb County, Alabama in the 1930s. The main characters are Atticus Finch, his children, Scout and Jem Finch, Dill Harris, Tom Robinson, Bob Ewelle, and Heck Tate. The story is about the summer Dill comes to Maycomb County, Alabama. He becomes friends with Scout and Jem and they spend the summer together. This also happened to be the time that Atticus, who was a lawyer, was assigned one of the biggest cases in the county's history involving Tom Robinson, a black man and Mayella Ewelle, Bob Ewelle's white daughter. Tom was arrested because of his association with Mayelle. Scout, Jem and Dill liked to watch Atticus throughout the trial. It took the biggest toll on Jem. It seemed as if Jem had matured after the trial. Bob Ewelle despised Atticus because of his job to defend Tom. In this movie, I believed that most of the actors did a very good job. They portrayed the characters as I imagined them from reading the book. Many of the actors were very expressive and believable. The only actress I didn't like was playing Mayella Ewelle. I didn't like the way her character was played and the actress seemed too old to fit the roll. Even though she was only in one scene, it was still a big part of the plot in my opinion and I feel that her acting skills were very much lacking. The actor who played Atticus had a tone of voice that made his convictions believable. I enjoyed his acting. The actor playing Jem did a very good job of showing how his character had grown and developed. The movie was historically accurate. It was believable that this could happen to a black man in the south. I did not like that at times it was scary, like when a drunk Bob Ewelle walked up to Atticus's car while Jem and Scout were alone in the car and Tom Robinson's son was outside. And also when he tried to attack Jem and Scout on the way home from the Christmas play. Overall, I didn't think it was that interesting for my age. I liked how I can compare this movie to society these days and am thankful that our society is less judgmental and the legal system is more fair. I learned not to judge people until I have walked in their skin. It is important to keep an open mind and not judge people based on other people's opinions. I think others will learn the meaning of how the truth can help or hurt a person's life. This movie is recommended for an adult audience. I would not recommend it for teens or grade school ages because some of the scenes are violent and scary and have themes intended for an older audience. I would rate this movie PG-13 because of the sensitive nature of the alleged crime. Overall, this was a good film because of the important message and it still applies today. On a scale of 1 to 10, this movie scores a 7 overall. Claire McArthur is a 14 year old, high school freshman. She is a member of the school basketball team, and enjoys spending her free time with her friends.
