Luke Buckmaster Guardian This is not a subtle film -- some scenes made my face react not like I’d consumed a delicious, nourishing sauce but like I’d wolfed down a brick-sized block of artery-clogging cheese. Sally H Loved this movie. Smart Aussie humour with a touch of darkness. Well written and fabulous actors. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/30/25 Full Review Ryan S I thought the depiction of low to middle class Australia was so poignant it brought me back to own childhood. The story itself was both tragic and uplifting and I was waiting with bated breath to either be shocked, horrified or emotionally wrecked. It was one of them. 5 stars. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/30/24 Full Review Callum S The song “How to Make Gravy” conveys the fallibility and rawness of a guy who’s made some mistakes. The movie stays true to, and expands on that idea, diving deep into male role models, and the realness of the cycle of violence in society. Wholeheartedly recommended to watch and reflect. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/28/24 Full Review Paul C It's a long time since I watched a movie that was so drenched in Aussie culture. From the house, to the kids playing in the yard, to the street scenes, and the cars. I must confess to loving Paul Kelly's Gravy song, so this was a must see for me. The movie didn't dissappoint, either. We finally get to see, brought to life, those beloved characters from the song. And do we get to see a cameo from Paul Kelly himself? Well, keep an eye out! For me, the movie was just what needed it to be. Full of heart, and a stark reminder, that Christmas can expose to us, not only what is wrong with our families, but additionally, what is right! Five stars from me because the movie, and the timing of it, were impeccable. Great acting all around, however, Hugo Weaving was a standout for me. Merry Christmas everyone, and don't forget the gravy! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/27/24 Full Review Phil C How To Make Gravy is just a fantastic movie. If you know nothing about the song, it stands up… And if you do know the song you’re still going to love it. It’s tough, gritty but tugs at the strings. It’s gonna go down as a little Aussie battler classic despite what some critics might say. It displays the ordinariness and bleakness of Australian suburbia and celebrates the goodness of most people who find themselves in tough situations either of their own making or through sheer misfortune. It’s unashamedly sentimental in parts but that is not a bad thing in a world that can sometimes be dark and unforgiving. But here’s the thing that 50% of reviews have forgotten: it’s essentially a Xmas movie. No one ever accuses that genre ever of being maudlin, unrealistic or over sentimental. This is a contemporary Australian take on our Xmas in that movie genre. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/05/25 Full Review Oh Damn I Movie did a great job at showing the softer side of men that's is usually shrouded with a brave face. Not many movies make me feel something but this one did. Great job to the team for not drawing out the movie for too long or adding too much extra.
