Derek Smith Slant Magazine Fritz Lang’s underrated noir elegantly toys with noir tropes and subverts our expectations. Jul 19, 2023 Full Review Richard Brody The New Yorker Though the action pivots on blackmail and murder, the heart of the movie is a regular guy's struggle with the inner violence of sexual frenzy and the outer violence of war. Oct 15, 2014 Full Review Variety Staff Variety Fritz Lang, director, goes overboard in his effort to create mood. Long focusing on locomotive speeding and twisting on the rails is neither entertaining nor essential to the plot. Mar 26, 2009 Full Review Joshua Polanski Midwest Film Journal Lang twists and toys with everything his audience knows about film noir. And he does this largely through the performances of his actors. Jul 4, 2024 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy The inconsistencies in Vicki seem less to do with being rooted in the noir tradition of keeping the leading lady in the shadows (is she good girl or femme fatale?) and more to do with sloppy writing. Martin B Can’t honestly say it’s a great script or the visuals were that interesting but in my view it’s a great movie. Mainly because of the leads, sizzling hot Gloria Grahame who oozes sensuality and Joe Average good guy Glen Ford. Plus a terrific supporting cast top to bottom. Nothing black and white in this one the three main characters all displayed shades of grey. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/07/25 Full Review Claudio C Human Desire (1954) Melodramatic Film Noir (11,736 – 01 Jun 2025 – by Claudio Carvalho) Jeff Warren (Glenn Ford) returns to his hometown after serving for three years in the Korean War and retrieves his job as a train engineer. He returns to the house of his friend Alec Simmons (Edgar Buchanan), who works with him, where he is a lodger. He is surprised by Alec’s daughter Ellen, who has grown up and become a beautiful woman and has a crush on him. Jeff is greeted by his former colleagues, including the yard master. He also stumbles upon the supervisor Carl Buckley (Broderick Crawford) and learns that he has recently married with a younger woman. When Carl is fired by the yard master for a discussion with him about damaged cargo of his responsibility, he begs his wife Vicki to visit the important John Owens (Grandon Rhodes) in New York City, since her mother worked for him and she lived in his house when she was a teenager. Vicki is reluctant to go but Carl asks her to go. Vicki goes to Owen’s office and stays out for hours. When she returns, the jealous Carl assumes that Vicki has been unfaithful to him. Afraid of Carl, who has threatened to kill her, she tells him that she had a love affair with Owens. Carl forces Vicki to write a letter to Owens, who will travel by train to Chicago, scheduling a meeting with him in his cabin. Carl knocks on Owen’s door and when he unlocks, he forces entry pulling Vicki and stabs Owen to death. When he intends to leave the cabin, he sees Jeff in the wagon and asks Vicki to distract him. Later he learns that she is Carl’s wife. When the murder is found, the passengers are summoned as witnesses, but Jeff says that he had seen anyone in the wagon. Soon Vicki and Jeff have a love affair, but Vicki is tied up to Carl since he has the compromising letter. When Carl, who is a drunkard, loses his job again, he sells his house and forces Vicki to move with him to another town. Now Vicki tries to convince Jeff that the only chance for them to stay together is if he murders Carl. “Human Desire” (1954) is a film noir directed by Fritz Lang with a melodramatic story. The problem is, only Simmons family is formed by nice characters. Carl Buckley, Vicki and Jeff Warren are not empathic; actually, they are unpleasant, and the viewer is not attracted by any of them. My vote is seven. Title (Brazil): “Desejo Humano” (“Human Desire”) My Blog: https://maniacosporfilme.wordpress.com/ Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/02/25 Full Review Will G An awesome noir film. Glenn Ford from “Gilda” did a great job and so did the actress from “It’s A Wonderful Life”. This movie had affairs and murder. I liked the train scenes. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/25 Full Review j f Another demonstration of Gloria Grahame’s infamous strong chin. Boy, she could really take a punch. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/24 Full Review Aldo G Gloria Grahame delivers an excellent femme fatale performance. She's the wife of an abusive husband who falls for another man. But, is her love true or is she using her seductive powers to lure her lover into murdering her husband? Or, both?? One of Fritz Lang's better Hollywood features. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/30/23 Full Review j F Excellent story, excellent directing, excellent acting. Even Broderick Crawford was superb.
