Ravenswood R Corny until it suddenly tries to be serious in the third act. Adults interact throughout but it is presented like it is aimed at an 11 year old audience. Just a very weird attempt at telling a story or making a movie. Elliot Gould is not very good in his role. Jemaine Clement is good, but he floats through it at a consistently medium level. The premise is a stretch and how the main character confronts the problems he faces is not even slightly believable. None of it is believable really. A weak comedy that literally relies on old jokes for laughs, misplaced syrupy music, and goofy montages. Like a bad rom com with no rom. Skip it. I would have if I'd known better. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/03/24 Full Review tom m On the whole entertaining, but the first 2/3 was rather plodding and bleak. In the last 1/3 it redeemed itself. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review robert h This uplifting story follows a gloomy playwright with writer's block who everyone said had a very bright future. But then his wife leaves him, taking their young son with her. Having no place to live, he moves into a senior community with his father who uses jokes to deal with the darkness in his own life. While trying to complete his play that has taken a few too many years, he also finds the humor we all need in life. Like all good comedies, this movie is filled with wacky characters and situations; unlike so many comedies, "Humor Me" is a movie with heart as well as laughs. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Good movie, some good dad jokes. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member Touching and cheerful. Gary Goldstein Los Angeles Times "Humor Me" will humor you - and then some. Jan 18, 2018 Full Review Andrew Barker Variety "Humor Me" manages to earn its audience's indulgence, if never its full affection. Jan 13, 2018 Full Review Simon Abrams RogerEbert.com The kind of lame, unimaginative comedy that constantly takes cheap shots at elderly characters, and then turns on a dime and begs you to see the humanity in them. Rated: 1.5/4 Jan 12, 2018 Full Review Daniel Howat Next Best Picture Though a bit light on laughs and emotional weight, Humor Me is a solid, heartfelt, and entertaining film. Rated: 6/10 May 19, 2022 Full Review Steven Prokopy Third Coast Review A largely serviceable, often quite amusing, piece that refuses to pander or ridicule outright. Jun 2, 2020 Full Review Debbie Lynn Elias Behind The Lens Showing great confidence in storytelling as a director, [Sam] Hoffman calls on the best of the best [actors]... while he taps cinematographer Seamus Tierney to maintain a light, bright visual palette complementing the humor at hand.
