Gene Siskel Chicago Tribune Clancy is known for writing difficult books, but the movie makes plausible a preposterous situation because of Baldwin's convincing, low-key approach to being a film hero. Rated: 3.5/4 Feb 11, 2015 Full Review Sheila Benson Los Angeles Times You may not be limp from accumulated tension when this hunt is over, but its cautiously upbeat global message leaves a satisfying glow and it operates with a crackerjack premise. Chris P One of my top 10 movies of all time. Grew up watching this movie and it still, after all these years, works. Just watched it for probably the 30th time-it just doesn't get old. Awesome cast, sad many of them have passed away. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/28/25 Full Review Russell H Well acted but boring to me Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/20/25 Full Review Zom L The Hunt for Red October is one of the strongest political thrillers of its era, and over three decades later, it still holds up remarkably well. Based on Tom Clancy’s bestselling novel, the film manages to take a dense, detail-heavy story about espionage, naval warfare, and Cold War politics and translate it into something both cinematic and gripping. What makes this film work so well is its atmosphere. The tension is palpable throughout, with the looming possibility of nuclear conflict hanging over every decision. Director John McTiernan (fresh off Predator and Die Hard) delivers a tightly controlled thriller that never loses its sense of scale or intelligence. The submarine setting feels claustrophobic yet cinematic, and the film’s pacing is nearly flawless—it builds slowly, but never drags. The cast is also a huge strength. Sean Connery brings gravitas and quiet authority as Captain Ramius, a Soviet commander whose motives keep the audience guessing until the final reveal. Alec Baldwin, in his only turn as Jack Ryan, delivers a grounded and intelligent performance, making Ryan likable and believable as an analyst thrust into dangerous waters. The supporting cast—Scott Glenn, James Earl Jones, Sam Neill, and Tim Curry—round out the film with memorable performances, each adding depth to the already intricate plot. Technically, the film excels. The submarine cinematography, use of practical effects, and tight editing make every encounter between vessels feel intense and real. Basil Poledouris’s score adds to the grandeur, with themes that balance Russian solemnity and American heroism without slipping into cliché. If there’s a flaw, it’s that the film can feel overwhelming on a first viewing. The jargon and political layers demand attention, but rather than being a weakness, it actually makes rewatching more rewarding. Ultimately, The Hunt for Red October is a near-perfect mix of action, suspense, and intelligence. It respects the viewer’s ability to keep up with its political games while rewarding them with suspenseful set pieces and masterful performances. A film that set the standard for submarine thrillers, it’s an essential watch for fans of Cold War cinema. A tense, intelligent, and masterfully crafted thriller that still stands as one of the best of its kind. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/16/25 Full Review Alejandro E I am not familiar with the original book, but the adaptation fulfils its mission of generating the right amount of suspense. It may not be one of Sean Connery's best performances, but as long as it is acceptable, that is enough. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/13/25 Full Review Raymond C Though definitely not the most exciting addition to the franchise, The Hunt For Red October benefits from a few truly suspenseful scenes and standout performances from Alec Baldwin and Sean Connery.
