Doug B I thought the story was shallow and predictable. There is no development of the characters and mostly the story just does not make sense. The ending is supposed to be emotional. It's not, it's just lazy writing. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/18/23 Full Review Kris C Paul Gross is always great. Very strong effort here. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/05/23 Full Review mudhutstudios I guess I thought this was going to be a poorly acted, let's pretend to make a war movie kind of film. It was far, far better than that. The plot was free moving and magnetic and the acting was really very good. I am surprised at the low scores for this, under the radar war flick. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/03/23 Full Review Balla S I am truly shocked at how low this scored with the Audience (not particularly the critics - it's not woke enough for them). I thought it was an extremely well-acted, very exciting movie. Well worth your time. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/06/23 Full Review robert j Not good to say about child kidnapping and people being shot but I thought the film was very watchable the acting was pretty good Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/11/22 Full Review Audience Member Conceited, cliched claptrap. Made in Canada. No spoilers in this review because I fell asleep before it finished. We're thrown into a military movie, which...I get. I had just watched Saving Private Ryan the night prior. Platoon is one of my all time favorite films, and it was a tossup between Hyena Road, which I never have seen, or Full Metal Jacket, which I have probably seen 40-50 times. I took a chance on Hyena Road and 30 seconds in I began to have doubts. Ever get one of those gut reactions that tells you something is off? I tried ignoring those. Big mistake. We start with some Canadian snipers up on a hill in Afghanistan. They take out a guy who is planting a roadside bomb about as conspicuously as Will Smith strutting up the Oscar stage defending his wife's honor. On their way to get picked up, one of the snipers sees some dubious oil stains on the road, and demands his team start taking pot shots at it. The road blows up in glorious fashion, and then the mountainside alights with what I can only describe as howling savages in a bad Cowboys and Indians movie. They find respite in a nearby village where a mysterious multicolored man lets them into their home, then shakes his fist at the insurgents to get off his dusty lawn. Somehow, the men make it back to base camp. I don't know any of their names. I don't care to know any of their names. Platoon eases into battle by showing body bags going into the same plane that just dropped off the new guys to Country. This movie tries to be Platoon in the same way, with a cringe dance off to "Play That Funky Music White Boy" vs. Platoon's bunker dance scene. The difference is we are never beaten over the head with the boys in Platoon. Here, we are bludgeoned that these are the care free good guys, thousands of klicks from home, just wanting to survive another day. Somewhere along the way multicolored eye guy becomes "The Ghost", the man who single handedly stopped the Russians 40 years ago, and now can be used to take out the Taliban, shown as mirror shade donning poppy pushers who drive white Chevy Suburbans, kidnap young girls, and are "the evil" ones. If the snipers can use The Ghost to take out the evil "BDK", peace will reign once again in the valley. Avoid like a sandstorm blowing into your tent that houses 1000 camels. Like I said, I fell asleep and have zero desire to see how it turns out. Let this review serve as a flag on the roadside saying IEDs Ahead, find another road. Nick Schager Paste Magazine Hyena Road runs two hours long, but its entire narrative could be wedged into a half-hour documentary. Rated: 3.5/10 Mar 11, 2016 Full Review Daniel M. Gold New York Times "Hyena Road" is a skillfully filmed reminder, if one is needed, about why Afghanistan earned its status as the "graveyard of empires." Mar 11, 2016 Full Review Michael Rechtshaffen Los Angeles Times Gross ... is ultimately unable to satisfy the rules of dramatic engagement. Mar 10, 2016 Full Review Richard Crouse Richard Crouse Paints a picture of the difficulty in fighting a war in very confusing times. Rated: 3/5 Mar 4, 2021 Full Review Marija Djurovic Cairo360 It's enjoyable enough on first watch, but it's unlikely you'll want to see it again. Rated: 3/5 Mar 31, 2016 Full Review Brian Orndorf Blu-ray.com Gross manages to craft a feature that's horrifying and strangely inviting at the same time, delivering solid characterization to go with all the chaos.
