Hypochondriac mistakes a few common horror ailments for exotic afflictions, but this unsettling look at mental illness and trauma proves properly contagious.

Bryan K The film "Hypochondriac" links cinematic thrill with real illness that hits home for many viewers. The fact that it also was nominated in San Francisco here in the U.S. for Outstanding First Feature and won another award and nomination internationally speaks volumes. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/12/23 Full Review Voodoo V The Very graphic anal male "love" scene was gross and UNNECESSARY. Not a bad flick, but when I think of it I am stuck remembering that scene alone so it kinda ruined for me cause I wasn't really down to watch a gay porno. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/22/23 Full Review Chris C Ooof, I kept watching hoping for either fun or mayhem, but neither happens. What if there was a movie that documented a tortured mind and how they get treatment? This is it! In other words, yeah, if you want to see a re-enacted almost-documentary about mental disfunction then Hypochondriac is for you. There's no mystery, no suspense, no scares, just a predictable story arc. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 06/16/23 Full Review Hailey R Saw this at Overlook last year and really, really loved it. Perhaps not your "usual" horror, I'd think of it more as a character study with horror elements being used to tell a story about mental health. Absolutely heartfelt performances and stunning visuals. Raw, connected -- but also, surprisingly, funny. Def see it. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/25/23 Full Review dave d If this movie isn't one giant delusion, you may wish it was during the closing credits. I just didn't get it, but it does have a strong performance from Zach Villa. There are several scenes here that make no sense in relation to the film. There are many head scratching moments that don't make sense. Visually, there is a lot here. It has a build, but once you realize where we're going that build is a letdown. Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com This is like a twenty-something LGBTQ+ Donnie Darko, complete with psychedelic conversations with prescient creatures wearing animal suits. Rated: 2.5/4 Aug 3, 2022 Full Review Simon Abrams RogerEbert.com A rather good psychodrama about repressed childhood trauma that’s also an underwhelming horror movie about mental illness. Rated: 2.5/4 Jul 29, 2022 Full Review Teo Bugbee New York Times The movie links cinematic thrill with real illness, tying movie monstrosity to specific psychiatric symptoms. Its armchair psychology makes for queasy viewing, a conflation of diagnosis and damnation. Jul 28, 2022 Full Review Pramit Chatterjee Digital Mafia Talkies Hypochondriac is one of the best horror movies because of the subjective manner in which it tackles such a common human condition. It is both scary and heartbreaking to see Heimann pour his heart out in such a visceral fashion. Rated: 4/5 Jul 20, 2023 Full Review Martin Unsworth Starburst While it’s not an easy watch, Hypochondriac is a superb film that takes no prisoners in its depiction of mental issues.
