Critics Consensus

Eye-opening and deeply disturbing, I Am Evidence sifts through an egregious amount of evidence to craft a powerful documentary about survivors and a very broken system.

By producing and appearing in I Am Evidence, Mariska Hargitay is offering her own hand to viewers, and accompanying them into a world that might otherwise be too awful to countenance. Go to Full Review

Despite every effort to silence these women, some have nevertheless made themselves heard as crusaders for change. Their strength is the reason I Am Evidence is a heartbreaking experience rather than a completely devastating one. Go to Full Review

As a documentary, Adlesic and Gandbhir's film works better when focusing on the individuals and their cases. The stories we hear are indeed tragic and sad and obviously hold more weight than your typical episode of Law & Order. Go to Full Review

So much is wrong with the justice system re rape. Statute of limitations, rape kits destroyed or untested... Not aware of anything more recent on this topic, but definitely worthy of follow up film. See more dustin d 04/13/2021 I Am Evidence is an illuminating documentary about the excessive number of untested rape kits across the U.S., illustrating the human element of the story by following the cases of several women. I had the privilege of seeing it at a small screening with one of the women featured in the film, which added depth to the experience. My main criticism is the film's suggestion at several points the reason the rape kits weren't tested was primarily due to sexual/racial/class bias of police officers and society in general, rather than the more likely explanation police departments in large cities are strapped for resources, overburdened with active emergencies, and rape cases are difficult to clear or prosecute (although these are hinted at). Certainly these biases exist, as the documentary shows, but the totalizing claim "Nobody cares about women" is demonstrably false. The film otherwise depicts a balanced view of police. The most powerful element of the film for me was the footage of warehouses full of untested rape kits, and the thought each one of the boxes represents a woman who was raped, underwent an invasive procedure to gather the evidence in that box, and is futilely waiting for justice. See more 11/04/2018 A damning and insightful look into the world of rapes and solving these crimes. Too many rape kits go unchecked in DNA labs and police warehouses. Its a serious problem as most of these men go on to rape more victims.
