Noëlle D. Lilley Chicago Reader Australian filmmaker Grant Sputore's direction keeps viewers on their toes, and we never quite know who to trust. Feb 21, 2020 Full Review Noel Murray Los Angeles Times It's an exciting film to watch, but an even better one to think about after - preferably in the company of a real, physically present person. Jun 20, 2019 Full Review Karl Quinn The Age (Australia) It's rich material, handled brilliantly by first-time feature director Grant Sputore, a West Australian, working from an intelligently wrought screenplay from American Michael Lloyd-Green. Jun 20, 2019 Full Review Aaron Charles InSession Film Rugaard has to be able to play the naiveté of a child while also underscoring the fact that this particular child has been uncommonly trained and is quite knowledgeable and resourceful. She handles it well... Greg W Slick production with good acting and a thought provoking storyline. Google the ending AFTER watching it - there was lots of stuff I didn't realise. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/21/24 Full Review kasope j I didn't think it would be that good (most dystopian movies end up being very ordinary)... It's thought provoking in an unsettling way, and ended with a great twist. Very well written. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/03/24 Full Review Apple S Way better than I was expecting. My soul was frequently grappling with complex quanderies to do with AI and trust, throughout the movie. It was written, directed and performed remarkably well I felt. The dynamics of trust and lying "for the greater good" and tribal loyalty to your own "kind" were all explored in a way in which I could tangibly feel the predicament to quite a profound degree. I often noticed the directing helped a lot with this too, capturing the emotion of a scene in the framing and choice of focus. Claire Ruggard as the daughter was also fantastic. Her reactions, at times, felt exactly fitting for the moment in a way that I couldn't quite envisage the emotion I was feeling until I saw it on her face. All in all a surprisingly good film. Steadily paced, thrilling at times, thought-provoking and captivating. Would warrant a second viewing, which is always a good sign. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/29/24 Full Review Joel B The special effects are good, but the movie is a sad commentary on humanity. The problem is it's predictable even though the acting is good. I am troubled by the poor climatic ending - - - It really fails to make a point. The story line is clear, but really does not get to a message worth watching. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/28/24 Full Review Alex F Pretty mid and predictable Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/21/24 Full Review Peter F Amazing creepy and original sci fi thriller.
