Audience Member Liliana Cavani's The Year of the Cannibals (known outside of the United States as I Cannabali) is an Italian film from 1970. It's about a pair of rebels who fight against a fascist governmental system. The government's law states that all rebels must be executed and that their bodies must be left on the streets as a warning to all citizens. It was inspired by the Theban play Antigone but set in modern times. In my opinion, the film is boring for most of its running time. It really does play out like a stage production, going so far as not having any decomposition on the corpses of the people in the streets. It also lacks any kind of style and the ultimate point of the film is a bit too obvious, feeling pretentious in the process. It lacks any sort of real punch and feels fleeting in its attempts, as well. The film stars Britt Ekland and Pierre Clémenti, both of whom are underutilized.
