luke l Dec 29 this movie touches many aspects of life in China in the late 80s and early 1990s. Getting from A to B was not an easy task in the poor old china in 90s . train travelling used to be slow and hot or cold in those green tin can carriage , I still vividly remember my days and nights sitting upright for long hours to visit friend and relatives. Pay phone was still a rarity in my childhood china let along mobile phones. I send telegrams to friends once I confirmed arrival time at train stations , China post still had motorbike courier to deliver my telegrams . The movie did acknowledge the sexual frustration of displaced rural labour workers whom had to live in extremely cramped conditions and pay for sex due to their long distance marriage and relationships . the director made some light hearted homage to this problem , but actual fact was wide spread and extremely disheartening. for millions and millions of rural construction workers , delayed wage payment , withholding salaries, no sick leave , no weekends , no annual leave , no social security were common occurrences , local government rubbed more salt onto their wounds by banning them the right to live in the city they were building .. the entire modern China was built by those millions poor souls . All the poor workers can do was to endure … The main actress did a good job of reflecting sense of innocence , they knew nothing about entitlement , the only little bit of happiness came from hard work and long train journeys …… See more Read all reviews
