Dr. Will Kennicott (Pat O'Brien) marries Carol (Josephine Hutchinson), a woman from Chicago, and brings her back to his small hometown. Despite Carol's affable manner, the townspeople are suspicious of her for being an outsider, and become more so when she suggests changes in the town. Shunned, Carol befriends young artist Erik Valborg (Ross Alexander), who mistakes her kindness for love.
