Capt. Ignatoff (Laurence Olivier) is confined to a hospital bed as a result of his war injuries and, while there, loses his heart to lovely young nurse Natasha (Penelope Dudley Ward). Natasha's family, however, has already betrothed her to war profiteer Briokoff (Harry Baur) in a desperate plan to solve their financial woes. Though Natasha is secretly falling for Ignatoff, she refuses his overtures out of duty to her family. When Briokoff discovers this, he jealously plots Ignatoff's downfall.
