From acclaimed director Joseph Kahn comes his latest film, ICK, a pulpy horror comedy bursting with splattery bedlam starring Brandon Routh, Malina Weissman, and Mena Suvari. For almost two decades, a viscous vine-like growth known colloquially as "The Ick" has benignly crept into every nook and cranny of American life while the residents of small town Eastbrook remain blasé about its existence. The exceptions are former high school football star-turned-hapless science teacher Hank (Routh) and his sardonically perceptive student Grace (Weissman) who are thrown together by Grace's mom Staci's (Suvari) closely-guarded secret and a mutual suspicion that the Ick is about to unleash some monstrous mayhem.

Critics Consensus

Slightly stuck in genre convention, but mostly an Ick-fest of horrific fun that oozes solid B-film trappings.

Brian Tallerico RogerEbert.com The problem is that the sociopolitical underpinnings of “Ick” feel relatively shallow and borderline sadistic, leaving viewers with a hollow “Blob” riff with too little to hold onto regarding character, setting, or even horror. Rated: 2/4 Jul 25, 2025 Full Review Barry Hertz Globe and Mail As much as Kahn delights in toggling the line between engaging and overwhelming the eye, Ick is a film rich in themes, even if its ideas are layered in between gobs of goo. Sep 18, 2024 Full Review Adam Nayman The Ringer Ick cements Kahn as one of our most iconoclastic entertainers. It’s a movie whose silliness is worth taking seriously. Sep 18, 2024 Full Review Sam C. Mac In Review Online Nowhere is Ick more galling than in its smug, equivocating politics. Kahn’s both-sides-are-bad stance reeks of privileged detachment, the kind that reduces actual ideological stakes to Internet cosplay Aug 12, 2025 Full Review Zach Youngs InSession Film It’s a better use of your time and nostalgia to see if The All-American Rejects or Good Charlotte are playing your local county or state fair or local resort and casino. Rated: D Aug 8, 2025 Full Review Abbie Bernstein Assignment X The Ick special effects, both for rooted forms and when it possesses people, are suitably horrific and the action is propulsive. George B Fun, funny and gnarly. The ICK is a new classic monster, moving and absorbing and terrorizing with its own unique, gooey sensibility. Its frightening and ominous whether its lingering quietly or loudly annihilating people (which it does, a lot). Its a monster, a virus, a cult, and a personalized psychological nightmare all bundled together. The whole film is supercharged with fourth-dimensional filmmaking, electric performances, and a soundtrack with enough 2000s heat to sell out Warped Tour. A superb Brandon Routh and rapidly-rising star Melina Weissman carry the films heart through a chaotic storm of humor and terror and liminal moments (which are probably the scariest parts). Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/01/25 Full Review Jason O Ick is a fun time. Good mix of comedy and horror with an awesome soundtrack. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/01/25 Full Review A W Funny. Intense. Very unique. Loved the fast pace too. Top notch performances to boot. It was a fun movie. Mena Suvari is still a smoke show! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/01/25 Full Review Louis P ICK is an absolute blast! Nostalgic, wild, and bursting with energy, heart, and humor. The punk rock early 2000's soundtrack couldn't be more perfect. Brandon Routh is solid and charismatic, grounding the madness, and Malina Weissman really shines! She’s funny, sharp, and totally magnetic. It’s one of my favorite movies of the year. It’s got smart, playful commentary underneath all the creature chaos. Fearless and fun filmmaking all around. Wish more movies like this were made. No one does it like Joseph Kahn! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/31/25 Full Review Chan very boring cool punk rock soundtrack cant save it Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 07/30/25 Full Review KAW143 A rapid fire creature feature like they never used to make. Ick skewers generations and genres with a lot of heart and just the right amount of gore. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/30/25 Full Review Read all reviews
