If you can accept the rudimentary special effects, this is a genuinely fascinating Czech space thriller. A manned mission to Alpha Centauri is interrupted by a signal from an apparently deserted satellite, and some time later two astronauts who have been working on the outside of the Ikarie are struck down with radiation poisoning and the remaining crew succumb to a deep sleep. The film anticipates several better known sci-fi efforts, such as Alien, 2001, Solaris and Silent Running, but has a quality and seriousness entirely of its own. Crisp B&W photography and a very effective electronic score add immeasurably.
