Sandra H This is a compelling drama about how the Cretians out manuvered the Germans by kidnapping their commanding officer. It is a fascinating movie about the Island of Crete. This movie was filmed in the rugged mountains. The movie ends with the strong willed Cretians out smarting the German army troops. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/15/23 Full Review Audience Member The relevance of this movie is that it tells the real story of Patrick Leigh Fermor, a British soldier who, after fighting together with the Cretense resistance in WWII, fell so in love with Greece that learnt the language, stayed to live there and wrote a couple of books about the experiencie. However, the movie, although shows how Fermor became one more in the landscape, does not thrill enough to make you feel it's a story important by its facts. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review s r Saw it for Powell and Pressburger. It was entertaining, but not so groundbreaking as their other work. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member The final joint venture by The Archers, Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, is a straightforward military adventure story that takes place in Occupied Crete in 1944. Dirk Bogarde is the leader of a small band who plot to kidnap the local German general and smuggle him off-shore to Cairo in order to embarrass the Nazis. To this suspenseful plot, The Archers add a dose of respect for the local culture, never subtitling the Greek (or German) that is spoken and using the music of Crete liberally on the soundtrack. Unlike some of their earlier art-directed-to-high-heaven films (The Red Shoes, Black Narcissus), things are scenic but not too style-conscious here - rocky mountain vistas predominate. Bogarde is charmingly heroic and much less chilly than he would later turn for Losey and Pinter. Not a bullseye but enjoyable nonetheless. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member WW II drama post WWII Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member A true story about a group of British agents and Greek resistance fighters performing an audacious operation right under the noses of the cream of the German armed forces. Beautifully played and paced in an endearingly modest and understated British manner this film is something of a classic.... And if anyone doesn't know - the title is a quote is from A Midsummer Night's Dream by another famous Brit. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
