      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

As unkempt and inscrutable as Joaquin Phoenix himself, I'm Still Here raises some interesting questions about its subject, as well as the nature of celebrity, but it fails to answer many of them convincingly.

Cole N The level that the satire goes to and how many people were fooled by it is impressive. There are many moments when there's a question on who's "in" or not, and if it's even a joke at all. There are funny moments throughout. Nevertheless it's kind of a boring watch, it feels like nothing really happens and it ends. I wouldn't want to watch it again, but as a sort of committed and experimental satire project it's somewhat interesting and entertaining. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/21/24 Full Review Kyle M Experimentally attempted gravitas that evoked honest examination on celebrity culture, fitting under Joaquin Phoenix's complex filter blandly meeting dated attentive results and blurry artistic focus. Phoenix's misdirecting endeavor, which some argued being a performative stunt, may have been reviewed as mixed albeit initial compel but his exploitive journey seems to have accomplished what he wanted to venture, therefore becoming the main takeaway beneath his "comeback" or then-current status. It also could be argued that this could be considered an essential brick to his stardom. (B-) Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/17/24 Full Review Jon W What an interesting piece of what many call performance art. it did however fool many of us which is what they to happen. i found it to be somewhat funny and somewhat a take on what it means to be famous. many critics hated this film and for the right reason. made me think that Aflect and Phoenix could of done something else with their time and money. the film if that is what you wanna call it was worth the watch for the first time. i am a fan of Phoenix and have been for a long time, but this is not what made me become a fan of him. Aflect and Phoenix made their point with this movie. we are all obsessed with watching celebs fall apart. but maybe we shouldn't be. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/25/23 Full Review Richard L No idea what Joaquin's idea behind this film was, but it's not interesting, it's not impressive, and it seems to have nothing to say whatsoever. Great ending sequence though. What an absolute madlad. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/01/23 Full Review tina m I enjoyed the movie; it startled me and made me laugh. It's possible it is a great work of art. It will never be recognized as such though because of a couple of scatalogical scenes. It seems that Joaquin Phoenix is method acting while playing his own self. He puts so much energy into this project, it must be something he needed to do to gratify an inner need. It requires a skilled psychological evaluator to fathom the roots of his motivation to make this movie. The movie has generated a huge amount of critiquing and analysis both positive and negative. It has been called a mockumentary. How many other movies in history are in this category? People complain that the movie has no purpose. Maybe when you're making a mockumentary, some accidents are involved, and you don't know where you'll end up. I think this film will forever detract from his image. People will always believe that he is in real life essentially the persona he projects in this film. And what is this persona's characteristics? Entirely unflattering ones. The main unflattering one is his obsession with self. The whole work is focused on one person--Joaquin Phoenix himself. I sympathized with his dropping out and not believing any more in his future in his present profession, his "nervous breakdown" so to say. On the other hand, his excess consumption of drugs, patronizing of prostitutes, and mistreatment of subordinates is what causes me to dislike him as a person. One thing I took away from this movie: I don't think I am as likely to idealize any celebrity again in the future, and understand that actors can be very flawed human beings. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review ariel h I thought it was excellent. Adore Joaquin Phoenix and the supporting characters. Phoenix is always exactly right.
