Sam Adams AV Club The first red flag is the opening title card, which reads "This is a true story." The use of "is" rather than "based on" or "inspired by" is a harbinger of the lack of perspective and humility that enables the film's most egregious excesses. Rated: C- Jul 24, 2016 Full Review Brian Orndorf BrianOrndorf.com It's on the sloppy side, but the primary textures of alarm are sustained and sharply performed, making for a gut-wrenching viewing experience with a foundation in reality that's too awful to bear. Fustun B This is a film that if you've never really knew someone with unbearable depression or felt it yourself it may not be easy to watch, but it struck a chord with me on such a deep level with really beautiful, dream-like sequences and wonderful acting that portrays a regular, imperfect but beautiful person with all the promise in the world and someone behind glass looking in with an obsessive and painful envy. This person was very very very ill and acted on her obsessions but was also completely failed by her parents unfortunately. It's not a happy film, but the story is shot from multiple perspectives to round out the pacing and the soundtrack is fantastic. I'm saddened that so many people won't really understand or appreciate this movie because it really shows someone who's felt the same lack of support from their parents, the same self loathing and the same envy as when I was young, albeit in the worst case scenario. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/10/24 Full Review Tim H I don't have a lot to say about this film, it was just dull and uninteresting. Even Sam Neill could not save this slog. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/02/24 Full Review gamopetalous The first thing shown after the opening dance scene is the portrayal of a bare breasted 15 year old girl mid coitus? That's legal, how? Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/28/23 Full Review Audience Member For me, the center of the film is Caroline, that buzzing bundle of contradictory passions that earned my awe and even sympathy… callous descriptions of her from other reviewers on this site go a long way in explaining how she became a killer… she read those reviews and went ballistic? The rest of the film is polished, evenly paced, maybe a bit dull, with music dribbled over scenes like treacle, but Caroline makes it all throb. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member My frustration with the movie is hiw inaccurate it is. The way the killer is portrayed, she wasnt that out of control. They way the police were portrayed, they began searching on the day after she went missing. The facts overall are just wrong. I understand you take liberties in stories like this because of time needs, but thus is just too much of a departure from the truth for me.
