Critics Consensus

In the Fade proves Diane Kruger is more than up to the task of carrying a movie -- even if the end result doesn't quite live up to her remarkable work.

Noah Berlatsky Chicago Reader It remains a good movie, with an important message about the costs of intolerance and radicalization. It doesn’t, however, quite live up to the shattering power of its early moments. May 17, 2024 Full Review Donald Clarke Irish Times In the Fade is never less than gripping. Rated: 3/5 Jun 27, 2018 Full Review Mark Kermode Observer (UK) It's a mercurial performance, subtly modulated, and somewhat at odds with an increasingly melodramatic potboiler that flirts uneasily with the pulpy conventions of vengeance-fuelled B-movies. Rated: 3/5 Jun 25, 2018 Full Review Dan Schindel Vague Visages In the Fade would be more tonally coherent if it stuck to the courtroom plotline, even if that would make it little more than a glorified episode of some legal procedural TV show. Dec 6, 2023 Full Review Sean Axmaker Stream on Demand It’s an emotional odyssey in three acts, a story of grief and rage and revenge in the modern Germany of weaponized racism, and [Diane] Kruger powers it with a ferocious performance as Katja. Jan 7, 2023 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Less a searing examination of sociopolitical issues than a Death Wish reconfigured for leftist viewers. Rated: 2.5/4 Aug 29, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

Kyle M Unsatisfying vengeance story and frustrating courtroom drama could accumulate some sort of societal criticism as defense, whilst mainly a captivating solo showcase for Diane Kruger’s definitive caliber. (B) Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/09/24 Full Review Logan D Following the death of her husband and child to a terrorist bombing, Katja's motivation for living is to see the criminals punished. As Katja, Kruger carries this film. Skillfully moving from joy to devastation to resolve, she is ferocious. I felt as though I had viewed a trilogy of short films. The first is losing her husband and grieving. Second, the court room drama. Finally, her decision to finalize the events she has suffered. The director, Akin, and his cinematographer, Rainer Klausmann, impress with their composition of scenes. I'll definitely look for other films by Akin. Some have an issue with the ending but I didn't. Highly recommended. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/21/24 Full Review Eye C Great movie, but is so hard to watch it, the injustice, the frustration. Putting that a side, is interesting, and goes to places uncommon, like the family affected is not a perfect good family, no, it's the opposite, for that kind of decisions this gives something out of the ordinary. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/04/24 Full Review Georgan G 3 & 1/4 stars. Quite a thriller, but ultimately predictable. Sad, since it's based on true events. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/21/23 Full Review Cem Y The plot is delivered perfectly and Kruger was especially spectacular.. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/21/23 Full Review jelisije j A movie that takes a realistic approach to a court system, hatred, forgiveness, and the loss and grief of a loved ones during horrific events in our modern world.
