Tom Long Detroit News "In the Last Days of the City" may be a purposely amorphous portrait of a city in flux, but it's also somewhat anxiously, irritatingly overloaded. Rated: C Sep 28, 2018 Full Review Jeff Reichert Film Comment Magazine There's a pleasing formal confusion that enlivens In the Last Days of the City, the years-in-the-works directorial debut feature of Egyptian filmmaker Tamer El Said. May 3, 2018 Full Review Robert Abele Los Angeles Times The air is thick with tension, regret, and promise in the Cairo of "In the Last Days of the City," the plaintive, remarkably self-assured debut feature from Egyptian director Tamer El Said. May 2, 2018 Full Review Joe Friar The Victoria Advocate There is a poetic aura that drives El Said's visually stunning debut. The performances are so natural that the film within a film feels like an actual documentary. Rated: 3.5/4 Oct 28, 2018 Full Review George Elkind Metro Times (Detroit, MI) Functioning better as a stream of images than a character-driven narrative, El Said's two-hour time capsule captures the streets and alleyways of Cairo with an intimately familiar hand. Sep 27, 2018 Full Review Josh Terry Deseret News (Salt Lake City) "Last Days of the City" is a moody film, only lightly guided by plot, and often more concerned with atmosphere than story. assem k The beauty and subtlety are abounding, inasmuch as they account for the underdevelopment; but they were almost wasted by the simplistic interpretations El Said insisted on interspersing to make a case for his credo. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Extremely long and boring. Understand the point being made but this movie could have been an hour and we wouldn’t have missed anything Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 06/05/18 Full Review Read all reviews
