Jens B Feb 19 Considering that 90% of all films on public television are crime dramas, I have hardly seen a good German crime drama. Until last night I saw "In the Shadows", a formally simple but attractive, calmly staged and incredibly exciting example of the gangster film. Basically, we follow Trojan through Berlin and watch him plan and pull off his next thing. Based on his contacts and their other contacts, a web is spun around him that on the one hand exudes a matter-of-fact naturalness; on the other hand, creates a dense atmosphere. Unfortunately, the acting in the supporting roles is sometimes really not good. The film also suffers from this German peculiarity of dialogue writing and the compressed/theatrical delivery by the actors. But maybe that's also because standard German sounds so unnatural to native speakers because in real life nobody speaks without a local accent. But these problems can be safely overlooked, simply because I had so much fun watching it. Highly recommended! Like any other human endeavor, crime is a collaborative business where you need confidence in your colleagues and careful analysis of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.
