Lurid but acted with gusto, Indecent Proposal has difficulty keeping it up beyond its initial titillating premise.

David Ansen Newsweek Not once in the whole silly exercise does he approximate a genuine emotion. Unable to dramatize marital love, he sells it, as if he were pitching perfume. Having nothing credible to play, Moore and Harrelson strike poses of love and anguish. Jun 7, 2018 Full Review Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times It is artificial and manipulative, and in the real world this sort of thing would never happen in this way, but then that's why we line up at the ticket window: We want to leave the real world, for a couple of hours, anyway. Quite simply, it doesn't present that much of a dilemma. Rated: 2/5 Aug 21, 2019 Full Review Vanessa Letts The Spectator Reminiscent of a series of Nescafé adverts. Matthew D One of the stranger erotic thrillers that’s not very sexy, but rather silly. Director Adrian Lyne’s erotic thriller Indecent Proposal (1993) plays out closer to a romance melodrama. It’s all too sentimental and cliche with a ridiculous premise from author Jack Engelhard. Screenwriter Amy Holden Jones tries to bring in some perspective and heart, but the over the top Woody Harrelson is simply too much. Most women seeing this movie now just think they’d easily pick Robert Redford over Woody any day of the week anyways. Composer John Barry’s pretty film score is lovely and romantic, but he’s basically just repeating his Out of Africa score. Robert Redford manages to be a charming Jay Gatsby type gentleman full of yearning, instead of leaning on what could have come across as far sleazier. Demi Moore is very sincere and moving in Indecent Proposal. It’s such a shame she’s always giving great acting in lesser movies. Woody Harrelson has great moments of realness, but also goes overboard here hard. Seymour Cassel is likable as Redford’s chauffeur. Oliver Platt is hilarious as Woody’s amiable and greedy lawyer. He steals all of his scenes. Billy Bob Thornton gets an amusing cameo at the casino table. Billy Connolly has a bizarre cameo as the hippo auctioneer for some reason. Rip Taylor also cameos in a serious moment as Demi’s boss instead of his usual flowery and eccentric characters. Tonally, the movie is all over the place. What is the deal with all the hippo motifs? Editor Joe Hutshing’s cuts let scenes linger for some genuine moments, but also gives the film perhaps too much space. It feels languid, boring, and just slow. Also at 117 minutes, it’s about 30 minutes too long for such a simple story that goes nearly nowhere. Cinematographer Howard Atherton has some pretty and suggestive shots. Leslie J. Kovacs’ hazy 90’s lighting is nice. Mel Bourne’s sets and Etta Leff’s fancy furnishings help the atmosphere. Overall, Indecent Proposal is just too long, slow, sappy, silly, and self serious for a movie that wants to be about a romantic couple, but also dive into this unruly offer. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/16/25 Full Review CT 8 A boring movie trying to be provocative and failing miserably. And as laughable as the premise is, it’s not nearly as laughable as those reviewing the movie and attempting to justify adultery/prostitution (which is the end product). If nothing else, it’s one way to show how lacking in morals one is without ever coming out and admitting it…. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 06/10/25 Full Review Sarfaraz A The film is based on Jack Engelhard's novel (published in 1988) of the same name. Starring Robert Redford, Woody Harrelson, and Demi Moore. The plot revolves around two recently married college sweethearts, Woody and Demi, who are in financial problems until they encounter a billionaire handsome Redford in a casino. Redford is captivated by Demi's beauty and offers to spend the night with her in exchange for one million dollars. After considering the offer to pay debts, money, and finance the house, the couple accepts it, but envy, remorse, and distrust soon follow. I'm not endorsing the plot, which, as the title implies, is indecent, and which film critics clearly overlook, since the film's title dismisses the subject as immoral. But do these film critics use the same reasoning and principles when they award glowing scores to superhero flicks and Halloween slasher films? Demi, Robert, and Woody all delivered excellent performances, even if we disagree with the probability of the couple's experiences in the film. However, the movie offers insight on what causes quick judgments to lead to the destruction of trust. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/12/25 Full Review Carrie C Watched this for the first time. I always thought this movie seemed silly, but it wasn't bad. I felt bad for Woody Harrelson's character and didn't hate Robert Redford's character like I thought I would. It's entertaining and has a pretty good story too.
