What to Know

Critics Consensus

It's undeniably visually impressive, but like its predecessor, Independence Day: Resurgence lacks enough emotional heft to support its end-of-the-world narrative stakes.

Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com The characters and their travails rarely, if ever, connect, and as such Independence Day: Resurgence is a handsomely produced, energetically paced waste of time that arguably never should have gone into production in the first place. Rated: 2/4 Aug 9, 2016 Full Review Roxana Hadadi Chesapeake Family Magazine Why is Independence Day: Resurgence even happening? This totally uncreative cash grab copies much of the original '90s action film but with practically no fun. Rated: 1/5 Aug 1, 2016 Full Review Perri Nemiroff Collider We're all well aware of the sequel stigma and have probably seen our fair share of films that feel like thoughtless attempts to milk a hit for all it's worth, but Independence Day: Resurgence might be one of the worst of the worst Rated: 1.5/5 Jun 30, 2016 Full Review David Griffiths Subculture Entertainment With a dreadful screenplay and nothing new when it comes to special effects ‘Independence Day: Resurgence’ ends up being one of the biggest disappointments of 2016. Jeff C who wrote this script? Cause you suck at it. Terrible sequel to what was an instant classic. I'm not even going to pair this with the original. ugh I want my hours back and my memory erased. This movie should only be shown at 3:00am on reruns. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/28/21 Full Review Hughe J Resurgence was released in 2016 and is the sequel to the 1996 classic Independence Day. This sequel stars Liam Hemsworth, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, and a ton of other actors whose name I don't remember. The movie takes place twenty years after the first movie and Earth has rebuilt after the invasion. They have incorporated the alien technology and have built a base on the moon. Jeff Goldblum plays Jeff Goldblum and investigates the only alien ship that actually landed on the Earth but finds that it sent out a distress signal. Naturally it took a bit to get there but the aliens return and they're not happy. We are then treated to a massive fighter battle and Brent Spiner, who was killed in the first movie but is back in this one, opens up a magic alien space ball and the Alien Queen flies to Earth to stop him. But Judd Hirsch appears in the desert driving a school bus to distract her and the alien queen gets shot saving the planet. While the first movie had heart, charm, and some charismatic actors this movie had tons of bad CGI, terrible acting, and an idiotic story that ended terribly. I would recommend watching the original movie and forgetting this one was ever made. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/07/25 Full Review Tanner W I thought it really held true to the original. Same cheese factor. Poorly acted. Genius! It was literally so ridiculous, that it blew my mind... in a good way. I was transported to the original movie and, somehow, this was just as fun a ride. It really took me back to my childhood. Sorry for all those that couldn't see this for what it is. You just need to embrace the cheese. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/05/25 Full Review Tommy D This much copies of the original 90 is terrible Who build this script??? Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/30/25 Full Review Andy H I saw quite a abbreviations of the movie like this: ID:R. I think it should have been TL:DR, you know, or TL:DW. But it looks slick, and really its not that much worse than other dumb pop corn movies. Just remember the pop corns and you are all good. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/17/25 Full Review Matthew J.
