What to Know

Critics Consensus

It's undeniably visually impressive, but like its predecessor, Independence Day: Resurgence lacks enough emotional heft to support its end-of-the-world narrative stakes.

Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com The characters and their travails rarely, if ever, connect, and as such Independence Day: Resurgence is a handsomely produced, energetically paced waste of time that arguably never should have gone into production in the first place. Rated: 2/4 Aug 9, 2016 Full Review Roxana Hadadi Chesapeake Family Magazine Why is Independence Day: Resurgence even happening? This totally uncreative cash grab copies much of the original '90s action film but with practically no fun. Rated: 1/5 Aug 1, 2016 Full Review Perri Nemiroff Collider We're all well aware of the sequel stigma and have probably seen our fair share of films that feel like thoughtless attempts to milk a hit for all it's worth, but Independence Day: Resurgence might be one of the worst of the worst Rated: 1.5/5 Jun 30, 2016 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson What was awesome the first time isn’t jaw-dropping anymore. Rated: 2/5 Sep 4, 2023 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies “Resurgence” flounders out of the gate, never shows an ability to build suspense, and offers up some of the most uninteresting characters I’ve seen in a while. Rated: 1.5/5 Aug 22, 2022 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review From start to finish, the film feels hollow and empty, the character development obligatory and forced, the action setups undercooked, the plot insultingly predictable. Jeff C who wrote this script? Cause you suck at it. Terrible sequel to what was an instant classic. I'm not even going to pair this with the original. ugh I want my hours back and my memory erased. This movie should only be shown at 3:00am on reruns. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/28/21 Full Review Ralph R Independence Day: Resurgence makes a bold attempt to follow up on the legacy of its iconic predecessor, but it falls short in many areas. Liam Hemsworth delivers a solid performance, but the script doesn’t give him much to work with, leaving his character feeling shallow and unmemorable. The story itself is straightforward and predictable, offering little in terms of surprises or emotional engagement. Attempts at humor and drama sometimes feel forced, detracting from the overall experience. While Roland Emmerich's direction keeps the film moving at a brisk pace, it often prioritizes spectacle over substance. The visuals work well enough to support the story, but they don’t push any boundaries, especially for a film released in 2016. Given the advancements in CGI and visual effects by that time, the production feels like a missed opportunity to deliver something truly jaw-dropping. Instead, it’s serviceable, doing just enough to convey the futuristic and alien elements but lacking the wow factor that could have elevated the experience. In the end, Independence Day: Resurgence is a decent popcorn flick for fans of sci-fi action, but it doesn’t live up to the standards set by the original. It’s fun in parts but ultimately forgettable, leaving viewers with the sense that it could have been so much more. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 12/01/24 Full Review Audience Member この世の中で一番がっかりし、とてもつまらない映画だ。 Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/26/24 Full Review Wendel L Direção: Bom Atuação: Bom Roteiro: Ok Caracterização: Ok Soundtrack: Ok Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/07/24 Full Review Anneli D I actually thought the movie was very good and I enjoyed it, I’m not sure why the reviews are all so bad. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/04/24 Full Review Alex r This movie and Pacific rim uprising have the same issue. If you are a fan of the original independence day skip it as it will break your heart, if your a completionist watch it otherwise pass. They tried to expand a universe without the original characters. They had the jeff and pullman back. But the whole feeling of the movie was not there. The cgi was okay, the acting was weak but it wasn't a heavy acting focused movie. It was meant to be an action movie, a popcorn flick. And it failed to be that because it brought nothing to the table. Everything it took a swing at did not work. It lacked humor, good acting, fun action, and the horror of an alien invasion.
