What to Know

Critics Consensus

It's undeniably visually impressive, but like its predecessor, Independence Day: Resurgence lacks enough emotional heft to support its end-of-the-world narrative stakes.

Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com The characters and their travails rarely, if ever, connect, and as such Independence Day: Resurgence is a handsomely produced, energetically paced waste of time that arguably never should have gone into production in the first place. Rated: 2/4 Aug 9, 2016 Full Review Roxana Hadadi Chesapeake Family Magazine Why is Independence Day: Resurgence even happening? This totally uncreative cash grab copies much of the original '90s action film but with practically no fun. Rated: 1/5 Aug 1, 2016 Full Review Perri Nemiroff Collider We're all well aware of the sequel stigma and have probably seen our fair share of films that feel like thoughtless attempts to milk a hit for all it's worth, but Independence Day: Resurgence might be one of the worst of the worst Rated: 1.5/5 Jun 30, 2016 Full Review David Griffiths Subculture Entertainment With a dreadful screenplay and nothing new when it comes to special effects ‘Independence Day: Resurgence’ ends up being one of the biggest disappointments of 2016. Jeff C who wrote this script? Cause you suck at it. Terrible sequel to what was an instant classic. I'm not even going to pair this with the original. ugh I want my hours back and my memory erased. This movie should only be shown at 3:00am on reruns. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/28/21 Full Review Michelle S I don't know what everyone is on about this being a bad movie. This movie may not live up to the original but this is a damn good movie. It stands on its own. Just because it doesn't live up to your expectations doesn't mean its bad. Plenty of action, one liners and comedy that can almost stand up to the original. And more than likely Will Smith was not available for the film. This movie should have gotten a better rating and people need to pull there head out of their... We wanted a sequel to see an awesome ending to this franchise. I stand on this! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/08/25 Full Review Ryan N This was such a let down. I am a big fan of the original, but this was just boring. They should have paid Will Smith whatever he wanted. He is the one that made the 1st good. I did like they waited 20 yrs to make it to match the movie timeline, but the younger cast just didnt hack it like the original cast. No wonder they didnt do much marketing on this movie, cause I dont remember seeing much about it Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/04/25 Full Review Antihrist P I bet that an average high school drama class would come up with a better script and produce a better movie. Each scene can be categorized as one of three types: pure cringe, bland trope and poor attempt of humor. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/29/25 Full Review Wade W Since I have watched nearly every patriotic or 4th of July movie ever by now, so on the 4th I reluctantly watched this mess. "Mess" is the best word to describe it. I have heard bad things about it ever since it released a few years ago. Turns out, most people were right. The film brings back some nostalgia in the form of Jeff Goldblum and some references to the original. The problem with this movie is that it has no soul. The writing is bad. The CGI is questionable. The acting is comical at times. I don't know what else to say at this point. It tries to follow up arguably the quintessential summer popcorn alien invasion movie, but fails so miserably. I like the idea of a sequel, but it was executed terribly. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 07/17/25 Full Review Read all reviews
