Indignation proves it's possible to put together an engaging Philip Roth adaptation -- and offers a compelling calling card for debuting writer-director James Schamus.

Danny Leigh Financial Times The period detail is reverent, every sweater and side-parting just-so. Yet the stifling design makes a good fit for the airless world in which Marcus is marooned, and the reminders of darkness and death at the edge of the film relieve the prettiness. Rated: 3/5 Dec 27, 2016 Full Review Tara Brady Irish Times A compelling drama. Rated: 4/5 Dec 27, 2016 Full Review Charlotte O'Sullivan London Evening Standard I'm glad Indignation exists. In its own, quietly explosive way, it leaves a very human stain. Rated: 3/5 Nov 20, 2016 Full Review Diana Tuova Spotlight on Film Schamus’s film is a particular kind of a film which is heart-breaking in individual scenes and bitter-sweet in its overall presentation Rated: 4/5 Aug 9, 2024 Full Review Josh Slater-Williams Vague Visages Indignation has a palpable humanity to its fury. Nov 13, 2023 Full Review Vadim Rizov Filmmaker Magazine Schamus can at least uncontroversially claim the mantle of having made the only at-least-partially-successful, generally acclaimed Roth adaptation to date. CG B I read many of these reviews and I cannot believe that none mentioned the unintended consequences especially of the mother's ultimatum to Marcus. Due to his mother's meddling, Marcus was expelled from the college and never graduated to live the life she wanted so much for him and he met his end in exactly the way she most dreaded instead of letting Marcus and Olivia have lives that should have been well lived and loved, Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/17/25 Full Review Georgan G An honest coming-of-age tale set in the early 1950s. The conservative college our protagonist gets to attend by scholarship is strict in the extreme. After a relationship with a fellow female student is ended by his mother, he tries to continue. However, he is expelled which means he is drafted & ultimately killed. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/03/24 Full Review Jerod S It's just a rowdy girl and a smart boy at a small college in the early 50s. Everyone is talking about subcontext, but it's too vague to even make a mark. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/01/24 Full Review nate m READ THE BOOK. It is notoriously difficult to adapt a Phillip Roth novel into a movie. Because so much of the "action" occurs in the mind of the protagonist. Only the novel can take you INSIDE THE THOUGHTS of the characters. Of course, it helps if the novel is written by a genius like Phillip Roth. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review william k Proper adaptation of the Philip Roth novel presents the tragedy in a calm, old-fashioned style with good period detail and an excellent cast. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Good movie. My first years of college were eye-opening in trying to understand the world. This film reminded me of that time.
