Peter V Compelling, heart wrenching, rivetting, glorious, breath taking, spectacular and immersive. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Particularly in the beginning it was hard to follow, as I don't know any background to Vietnam/Indochine as they call it really. Having a frame of reference for the political times would've been helpful, but eventually as film goes on u get what was going on politically. I thought this film was going to be a sexy, romance and didn't realize that was just a backdrop for a much more serious and sad Asian political drama. It was very well acted though, loved the cinematography and all the details-costume design, sets, etc...Really felt transported to the era and location. There wasn't a whole lot of dialogue and at times you wonder what esp the main woman Elaine's character is thinking. There is much twists and turns u can't foresee and much heart ache. That being said the story is an epic, I love epics, esp well done ones and this one was a lot to digest satisfyingly. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member Epic in scope and intention but ultimately incompletely melodramatic which is forgiven due to a luminous Deneuve Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review steve d For me it really dragged. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Indochine indulges itself in its racist, colonialist and romanticized melodrama, privileging questionable points of view over historical accuracy. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review david l Indochine is a typical foreign Oscar winner which favors style over substance. The plot is weak, sometimes sappy and the runtime is prolonged with some pacing issues. The characterization is also quite weak, but the protagonist is admirable and well played by Catherine Deneuve. The movie is sweet, charming and quite epic in terms of scope, cinematography, score and imagery, but in the end it is a standard period piece by all means.
