Critics Consensus

Although Initiation struggles to balance its gorier goals against the story's social commentary, that added maturity makes this slasher a slight cut above.

No horror movie ever gets the fraternity-sorority scene right, but this one is trying to be thoughtful, at least. Go to Full Review

This is better than an average hack-and-slash, thinking about more than just blood and gore -- although there is plenty of blood and gore. Go to Full Review

A thoughtful and welcome consideration of grief masquerading as a slasher (albeit still a good one), Initiation is a stunning showcase for co-writer and lead actress Lindsay LaVanchy. Go to Full Review

See more Lisa D Jan 13 Ya'll have all heard of 911 right? See more brad p 02/23/2023 Initiation has some of the ingredients of a great slasher but sadly does not realize its full potential. See more 01/05/2023 Overall, I quite enjoyed this film. Instead of being just another slasher, the film successfully introduces new elements such as technology. It introduces multiple mysteries that I found to be rather unpredictable, and the reveals felt satisfying.  It certainly takes a little while to get going, but I was invested once several mysteries were outlined.  The ending is also pleasing, but I can't deny that it felt somewhat abrupt and rushed.  Either way, I still would class this film as a hidden gem and it comes recommended to lovers of slashers such as Scream. See more Read all reviews
