Critics Consensus

Spike Lee's energetic and clever bank-heist thriller is a smart genre film that is not only rewarding on its own terms, but manages to subvert its pulpy trappings with wit and skill.

As unexpected as some of its plot twists is the fact that this unapologetic genre movie was directed by Spike Lee, who has never sold himself as Mr. Entertainment. But here it is, a Spike Lee joint that's downright fun. Go to Full Review

A straight-forward but enthralling caper that does right by its characters while offering Lee the wiggle room to poke at a few social issues along the way. Go to Full Review

This is the director's best work since 1998's He Got Game. See more Erik V Nov 25 Exciting thriller. I couldn't guess what was coming next. I did correctly guess one or two moments. One of those movies where you rewatch and understand what happened in a particular scene, based on having seen the movie and knowing how it ends. See more Amanda . Nov 14 It’s one of the most boring movies I’ve seen in the past 25 years 2 hours of my life I’ll never get back See more Blu B Sep 7 A Classic Heist Thriller. Really well made all around. In a sense it's a no frills bank heist movie mixed with a little bit of a twist. Washington is the best thing here with a stellar cast. I do wish it had a bit more color to it as things can look grey and dull lots of times. But the direction is really good. I would'nt know this is Spike Lee though watching it which is crazy. My issues really are minor. The whole subplot with Plummer/Foster feels like it's seperate from the core Washington vs the robbers. We jump around a lot with Foster, Washington, and the robbers and interviewing the hostages in the first half and it can be a bit distracting. The best moments are when it's just the old fashioned good vs bad guys wondering how they'll get out of this. In the second half when it starts just focusing on that it becomes phenominal and you wonder what well happen next with a quite a few suprisies along the way. The twist is good but it's a little bit of a plot convience at the end and honestly I still don't really know how Plummers/Foster ties into the core plot. It feels like if you just would've kept the robbers and Washington trying to outsmart each other the whole time it would've worked just as well if not better because we would've had less jumping in the first half. Also, because of that it feels like the ending drags a bit also for 5-20 minutes a bit too long trying to tie up all loose ends. Kind of reminds me simliar to how I feel about Return of the King. But even still it's really well done, keeps you suspensed, and has a great twist. Anyone who is a fan of any actors in this, Spike Lee, thrillers, or heist flicks should check this out.
