In 1950s England, sailor Harold Guppy (Rupert Graves) arrives in a small seaside town looking for his estranged brother. After a brief reunion, Harold finds a room for rent in the house of Mrs. Beasley (Julie Walters), her meek husband and their teenage daughter, Joyce (Laura Sadler). It's clear that Harold has a troubled past, but his future is about to get more perilous yet. Despite the rosy surface, Harold soon finds himself in a tawdry sexual tug-of-war that won't end well.

Its deadpan humor is entertaining, up to a point, but that point is passed before the movie is quite at its halfway point, and then we're left watching increasingly desperate people who are trapped by one another's madness.

The movie might have been bearable as purely a work of fiction. However, it was based on a murder committed by a pedophile, who seduced and killed the two victims. In fact, he assaulted the daughter at their final picnic before stabbing her through the heart. To have a movie portray this as not only a vehicle for a heroic young man as victim, but as a "dark comedy" is unconscionable. It would have worked much better as a close-to-the-facts drama. Surely the real story was strange enough. Horrible.

Synopsis
