Ken Hanke Mountain Xpress (Asheville, NC) The first -- and in most ways, the best -- of Bela Lugosi's 'Monogram Nine' from legendarily penurious producer Sam Katzman. Kit V It really depends on what you expect from this type of movie if you are looking for sophisticated awsome acting to rival the very best then you will fall at the first hurdle. On the other hand if you are looking for an hour long movie with some fairly decent tension building for the time and a cast of actors who seem to be acting on the stage rather than on the film set then you will be pleased. A curious tale; a wife who is dead but lives and a series of murders that are dead obvious but convincingly staged, then, of course, we have Bela. I suspect that this is one for the Bela fans out there as we spend nearly the complete hour with him and as usual he does a great job of bringing the creepy into the affair. Ok, this is no Dracula but it is a good film if you like budget movies of the early 40s and plots that take zero understanding. If you have a sense of humour and an hour to kill this one will do the killing quite nicely for you. No thinking is required. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review martin a This is a great creepy horror as a man murders people but has no memory of what he is doing. It is spooky and you do wonder if he is just pretending not to know or doesn't actually remember. The performances are great, and all the actors shine brightly. This is one not to be missed. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member I love this movie , at least once every year I have a day devoted to Bela Lugosi films and this one is always a favorite. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Interesting premise on how deep guilt affects people differently, and can bring out the worst when multiple persons are failing to deal with inner demons. Budding psychologists can spend hours analyzing this cast. Notable is how Bela & Betty are both victims of their minds, and Clarence is not your typical negro servant in that he has the most balanced mind of them all. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member more like an ed wood film than joseph h lewis Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member The master carries this movie--A diamond in the (very) rough!!
