      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

At once beholden to the established conventions of the genre and delightfully subversive of them, Ip Man is one of the most exciting -- and refreshingly character-driven -- martial arts films in years.

      G. Allen Johnson San Francisco Chronicle A period piece filmed on obvious but eye-pleasing studio sets with wall-to-wall kung fu and a simplistic, philosophical message. Rated: 3/4 Oct 28, 2010 Full Review Joseph Jon Lanthier Slant Magazine An explosive exercise in bare-knuckled myth-biography. Rated: 3/4 Oct 7, 2010 Full Review Simon Abrams New York Press It remains an inexplicable, contextless bit of kung fu historicosploitation -- albeit a very satisfying one. Oct 6, 2010 Full Review Sean Axmaker Stream on Demand It’s all quite conventional... and nonetheless rousing. Yen, a master martial artist who learned Wing Chun for the role, is a model of martial grace and physical control... Noah g nice movie, good fight scenes and story Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/24/24 Full Review David W An incredible, beautifully produced, martial arts drama spectacular which is wonderfully performed by Donnie Yen who more than does honour to the incredible story and to the great man himself. One of my favourite action dramas for many a year. Everything from the script, direction, music, acting and fight choreography is nothing short of magnificent. An absolute triumph. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/27/24 Full Review Yudha S Very Good, tapi beberapa adegan di awal banyak yg minus Rating : 9/10 Almost Perfect Follow my Instagram : @yudhasatria955 Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/26/24 Full Review Pallas K "Ip Man" is an exceptional martial arts movie. It has a captivating story, a well-developed main character, and mind-blowing martial arts sequences. The movie is set in China during World War II when Japan had conquered it, making it a unique and compelling setting. The action scenes are the highlights, and they're so fast and realistic that you can feel the punches. It's a truly immersive experience. Donnie Yen is the perfect casting choice for the role of Ip Man. Overall, it's one of the best martial arts movies out there. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/06/24 Full Review Steve D Very solid action film with great fight sequences. I really like how the dialog and story seemed true to eastern film that I watched as a kid. However the improvements in setting the story locations and cinematography set this up to be a masterpiece. This film turned me on to a great actor Donnie Yen, who has a very likeable personality on screen and has you rooting for his character from the onset. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/30/23 Full Review Leaburn O It's like most martial arts films in which the person lot is predictable and the backstory is simply there to set up the fight scenes. The frustrating thing on top of all this is the ridiculous CCP propaganda which is just too much. There are some good elements but generally just more martial arts nonsense.
