Critics Consensus

It isn't quite the breath of fresh air that Iron Man was, but this sequel comes close with solid performances and an action-packed plot.

Deborah Ross The Spectator If there were any new ideas, I failed to spot them, as did my bone marrow, which slept through most of it anyhow. Aug 30, 2018 Full Review Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online I don't think the story was nearly as strong as that of The Dark Knight, but it sure was entertaining and surprisingly funny... and sets up The Avengers quite nicely. Rated: B+ Sep 11, 2017 Full Review Nick Pinkerton Village Voice As for the actual grand finale, Downey Jr. and Cheadle seem like they're already network gaming the PS3 release instead of facing any actual threat, and Rourke goes out like a chump. Apr 15, 2013 Full Review Anushka Halve Film Companion This corridor fight sequence perfectly encapsulates the character's lethal efficiency, and adds a touch of flair to an already fantastic scene... Dec 11, 2023 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review The most extraordinary aspect of Iron Man 2 is how it brings together the film’s seemingly unending string of subplots, tightly confined inside a mere 2-hour runtime, and makes the process feel effortless. Rated: 3/4 Sep 5, 2023 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson While it's not chapter-and-verse based on any comic story and takes a lot of liberties, "Iron Man 2" is an undeniably fun piece of comic and summer entertainment. Donavin D A follow up to the start of the MCU — more suits, more money and more Robert Downey Jr. It’s fun enough and the action is enjoyable, but the film does struggle with some uneven storytelling, weak antagonist and following way too closely in the footsteps of the original. Iron Man 2 shows it knows how to invest us in Tony Stark. RDJ portrays him masterfully, continuing to embody his snarky and sarcastic personality with ease — he will forever be Iron Man and while the first film introduced us to him as Stark, this one solidified that no one else would ever be able to take over. The action in this one is fantastic, a true step up from the original, that opening set to AC/DC is still burned into my eyes all these years later. The suit up scene on the track? Pure gold and I will never get sick of it. Unfortunately, and it can be said for all of Iron Man’s solo villains, whiplash is a pretty weak character overall. Leading a generic revenge story that doesn’t even directly involve Tony, a boring climax with a final design for whiplash that looks more like the previous films Iron Monger with whips than a new character and absolutely no chemistry between Whiplash and Iron Man. That lack of chemistry on screen makes their fights less emotional, integral or even just meaningful outside of good guy vs bad guy must fight. The problem, for me, is that the film does has great moments — solid action, and having RDJ on screen will always be a treat, the introduction of Black Widow and War Machine is incredibly cool but the story that holds all of this together isn’t strong enough to support all of these great ideas and additions. Iron Man 2 is tough for me, there isn’t enough here to set it apart from the original and the slight tweaks they do make aren’t really for the better. The antagonist is weakly written and their climactic clash at the end feels like a generic copy of the first films but bigger. However, with some superb performances, interesting new characters and some adrenaline pumping action scenes, it’s not all bad though it could have been so much more. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/22/25 Full Review Sexy F I think we all know why I’m here. It’s because Scarlett Johansson was in the movie that is immediate five stars Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/13/25 Full Review EleckVick 7. I believe this movie shows great character development for Tony stark as a person showing his growth from narcissistic character to one that’s aware that he needs others to succeed at times. We see a Tony who has given up on life because he wasn’t able to figure things out himself till a video from his dad gives motive and most importantly a solution showing Tony that he still depends people, strengthening his relationship with Pepper, Rhody, and developing he team working skills for the upcoming avengers. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/11/25 Full Review Kári Leó Ó This movie gets a lot of hate but I don't get it. It is fun but I will say I don't like Justin Hammer Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/08/25 Full Review Jace T Iron Man 2 came out pre-Avengers, and that is really what makes this movie fall lesser than the original. The extra stuff added in that builds up to The Avengers to truly make the MCU is the only thing that holds this movie back from being as good as the original in my opinion. I love Mickey Rourke as Ivan Vanko in this film, and Robert Downey Jr. kills it as Tony Stark as usual. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/12/25 Full Review Ahmad Edris S its chill cool sequel but its just your average movie nothing special, really shows how cocky Tony Stark is.
