Critics Consensus

Though well-filmed, Irreversible feels gratuitous in its extreme violence.

Empire Magazine Rated: 5/5 Dec 30, 2006 Full Review Terry Lawson Detroit Free Press Extremely difficult to endure, and if you choose to endure it, it could leave you feeling angry and upset. Nevertheless, this is serious filmmaking, and Noe is a gifted filmmaker. Rated: 3/4 May 9, 2003 Full Review Bill Muller Arizona Republic A fascinating study in excess, a movie that seduces and repulses as it explores the merciless nature of fate. Rated: 4/5 Apr 24, 2003 Full Review Bianca Garner Filmotomy Noé is a director who understands how to cojur up a reaction from the audience, and he understands the power of film. His films aren't always the easiest or the most enjoyable to watch, but I can appreciate the work that has gone into creating them. Oct 11, 2024 Full Review Yasser Medina Cinefilia Noé, with a disruptive aesthetic, evokes explicit images to point out a text about the irreversibility of time and moral actions, but whose narrative often frequents places that lose the pulse in its model of urban transgression. Kyle C So I guess I’m watching Gaspar Noé’s filmography out of order. I watched Enter the Void recently and really enjoyed it. If you don’t know, Irréversible was the film he directed immediately prior. To put it frankly, it’s clear that he was still honing his ideas at this point. While Enter the Void feels intentional, meaningful, and tight (despite its intimidating runtime), Irréversible feels awkward, gratuitous, and laborious (even though it’s just over 90 minutes long). There are a few scenes that are particularly effective (if you’ve seen the film, you know the ones), but a lot of it is just filler. And there’s definitely some meaning that can be extracted if you squint hard enough, but it really feels more like a director throwing slurs and violence at a wall for shock-value, just to see what sticks. The directing isn’t bad, but it’s misused, unfocused, and unpolished. Lastly, the non-linear storytelling doesn’t do this film any favors. What starts as an intense endeavor ends with a whimper. And to be totally clear, I get what he’s trying to represent with this, but it just doesn’t make for an effective viewing experience. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/13/25 Full Review Mobi C What was the aim here? To shake a camera for 30 minutes in circles until the viewer grumbled in frustration at what is possibly a 3 year old at the cameras helm? Please, show us what the hell is going on. Dark, Light, Mid, Dark, Light, Pick a mood already. 35 minutes of film to finally stabilize the view point. If Monica Bulluci wasn't so hot, this film would never have gotten off the start line. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/01/25 Full Review T C One of the two worst movies I've ever seen. It is the definitive example of the phrase "gratuitous violence." Noe seems to be in love with shock value and lacks any substantive ideas to back it up. A truly repulsive and unnecessary film. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/23/25 Full Review S R My friend Adam from FAMSU recommended it and now I'm not even sure why since I struggled through it and even had fast forwarded it to get through. I'm sure I ended up missing some of the plot in the latter half. I never want to see it again and shouldn't have bothered. SLC DVD. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/11/25 Full Review Thirdi A This film delivers on its intense reputation, offering a gripping and brutal experience. However, the overly ambitious camera work detracts from the overall quality. The cinematography feels chaotic, as if shot by someone casually tossing around an iPhone. Unfortunately, the editing seems to embrace this erratic style, treating it as visionary rather than refining it for clarity and impact. While the film succeeds in many ways, the disorienting visuals may leave some viewers frustrated.
