04/28/2020 The film is compelling as a coming of age story about a rebellious teenager trying to find his way in a life that seems to push back on him at every corner. The issue is, there isnt a whole lot in the way of memorable scenes and moments. The movie functions well in terms of performances and pacing, but it needed something to help me really dial in with it emotionally. Giving us a better sense of who he is in the midst of his highs and lows could have helped connect his choices with the scenes where he is at his most vulnerable and broken. But I did like the movie on a conceptual level, giving me enough to grab on to the idea of a young man trying to make sense of his world, watching as he learns how to measure his projected confidence against the reality of the hurts and fears that it masks.
