Vitoria F A short but very interesting documentary. I didn't know anything about Kinmen Island, but I enjoyed learning about it. A well-written account by the director that makes you think. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/03/24 Full Review matthias s "Island in Between" offers a reflective journey through the eyes of S. Leo Chiang as he navigates the complex relationships between Taiwan, the United States, and China from the vantage point of Kinmen's islands. The documentary serves as an educational portal, particularly for those unfamiliar with the nuances of communism and the civil war with China. While I appreciated the historical insights, the film lacked the gripping drama and emotional intensity I craved. It presented the important history in a well-made but somewhat dry manner, leaving me longing for a deeper connection to the filmmaker's perspective. Despite its captivating moments, the documentary failed to evoke a lasting impact or emotional resonance. While I acknowledge its Oscar nomination-worthy message and the necessity of telling this story, it ultimately falls short of deserving the win. "Island in Between" serves better as educational material than as a compelling cinematic experience. It's a commendable effort, but one that left me wanting more depth and emotional engagement. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/26/24 Full Review Yash B "Island in Between" deserves some points for being a personal story. The conflict presented in the movie feels like it deserves its own documentary, but it was interesting enough to see how this one family has connected to these different places throughout their lives. Overall, it is an informative and insightful documentary short, just not one that necessarily was meant to totally resonate with me, but still one I liked watching.
