Audience Member One to watch after seeing THE ARTIST. Richard Dix is solid. Takes Tom Mix, A STAR IS BORN (sans booze), Babe Ruth, BOY'S TOWN, and a wonderfully superfluous parade of celebrity lookalikes, and improbably mashes them up. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member yet another version of a silent star struggling with the transition to talkies Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member A nice little gem that's been tucked away for some time. The Film Foundation's restoration is stellar, though. It boasts a story by Samuel Fuller (good), with Richard Dix and Fay Wray as its stars (erm... oh.) But they both surprised me, Dix in particular. It's not a particularly complex or nuanced performance, but it's quite genuine. The story itself is very good, I thought, one of integrity vs. prosperity and all that stuff, built around the sound conversion of late-20s Hollywood. Although clunky at times and corny, Lachman manages to pull off a few nifty sequences, including an unusual barfight, and a party attended by a massive cast of Hollywood stand-ins. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member This was an odd one. A western star from the silent film days finds the modern world passing him by. It was interesting, and Richard Dix does a great job. The film though gets too bogged down in a sentimental sub plot with sick kids that pretty much sinks it near the end for this one to be much more then a curiosity.
