John DeFore The Hollywood Reporter Begins as unpersuasive horror, then segues into annoyance-based comedy before veering in stranger directions. Jul 28, 2017 Full Review Dennis Harvey Variety Watchable if never really scary or funny enough to leave a memorable impression, this middling endeavor should nonetheless pull in a fair number of home-viewing horror fans with its offbeat theme and lurid title. Jul 28, 2017 Full Review Rob Staeger Village Voice Like a dog turd lurking in the middle of a jelly doughnut, a needless, brutal rape scene poisons the whole experience. Jul 27, 2017 Full Review Joey Keogh Wicked Horror As zombie movies go, It Stains The Sands Red is among the best modern examples. Rated: 8/10 Oct 4, 2019 Full Review Kat Hughes THN An inventive update to an over-saturated market, It Stains the Sand Red stands away from the pack and is certain to become a genre classic in years to come. Rated: 4/5 Aug 29, 2018 Full Review Norman Wilner NOW Toronto In an era of peak zombie, it's rare to find a variation on horror's current favourite sub-genre that feels fresh and intriguing. Soulsby B An amazing film that completely subverted my expectations. The film is depressing and sad yet manages to have some great funny moments- and thankfully without going into full on comedy. The practical effects are amazing too. I don't want to spoil the movie at all, but I will say that what happens between our two main characters makes me feel so much for Molly... and even I got attatched. I definitely recommend this film to EVERYONE. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/15/24 Full Review Bryan B A stripper and her zombie sidekick roam the desert. Definitely a departure from the standard zombie flick. Not sure why some descriptions called it a comedy. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/17/24 Full Review Leslie J This is THE best zombi movie ever made! My sister and I watched it together. I don't even particularly like zombie flicks but this one was a riot! Had my adult ADHD attention from start to finish! My usually chatty "talks through the movie" sister Cathy actually watched it QUIETLY!! Except when were both cracking up! It's clever, imaginative, very entertaining and different . If you're looking for something scary, this isn't your movie. If you want to see a really good movie for a change, give it a go! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/06/23 Full Review Hugo - Shudder F A zombie tirelessly chases a woman across the desert. But halfway the journey the unexpected happens: Molly develops an emotional bond with her chaser. She also goes through a self-introspection on her choices in life, especially the ones concerning motherhood. An unusual and refreshing approach to the zombie horror genre! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/06/23 Full Review Audience Member The world's ending and you're stuck in the middle of the dessert with a zombie hot on your trail. What do you do? Make him carry your bags, of course. Brittany Allen ("Smalls" deserves a nod, too) keeps this already great film alive until the every end. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member it had me going for a little while, but the zombie's facial prosthetics were painfully cliche despite there being some otherwise decent makeup/costume work in the piece. they should have just made the guy look sick, not spirit gummed fake cheekbones and crap onto him. it looks like an expensive halloween costume. i was willing to deal with that for a certain amount of time but i have to agree that this long, out of place, extended, and graphic rape scene was completely unnecessary. a real writer/director can imply this kind of danger or trauma without such pointlessly graphic displays, and if this is supposedly a feminist film, it would not have made such a spectacle.
