What to Know

Critics Consensus

A collection of three shorts by Don Hertzfeldt, It's Such a Beautiful Day is an impossibly dense and affecting piece of animated art.

Hertzfeldt's work is sometimes elusive in its simplicity, but it can be profound as well; with his humor, darkness, philosophical yearning, and insistence on drawing every line himself, he may be the only legitimate successor to Charles M. Schulz. Go to Full Review
Forrest Wickman Slate 03/06/2018
And though the animation, sound, and special effects were all done by one man slaving away at his home, It's Such a Beautiful Day is realized with remarkable inventiveness and technical sophistication. Go to Full Review
John DeFore The Hollywood Reporter 03/06/2018
A truly moving meditation on identity, family and (as the title of his previous short immodestly put it) the meaning of life, Hertzfeldt's magnum opus is more cosmically satisfying than The Tree of Life. Go to Full Review

A film about waiting for death and embracing the life that's left, even though we don't entirely understand it. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

See more Dominik G Jun 15 pretty good depiction of alzheimers. thought id be getting into something emotionally heavy, idk why See more Kevin P Jan 26 Such a riveting portrayal of dementia that’s beautiful, charming, and funny as it is haunting and devastating. The narration feels so relatable with its fine little details of the main character’s POV thoughts and minute observations. It’s the little parts that count and really add up to the sum of its parts. It’s a visually and audibly stunning film with amazing editing that really puts you into Bill’s shoes and feels like the ultimate experience of the human condition and our grappling with our own mortality and finite presence on this Earth. See more Dave S Dec 28 If you can somehow imagine a collaboration on an animated film featuring stick figures with a script by Charlie Kaufman and plenty of imagery provided by avant-garde filmmaker Ken Brakhage, you’ll have a pretty good idea of what you’re getting into with Don Hertzfeldt’s It’s Such a Beautiful Day. Without giving too much away, Bill lives in a world of daily routines, but finds his world altered by a mysterious illness, his relationship with his ex-girlfriend, and his tumultuous past. Despite the at times simplistic visuals, it’s a surreal meditation on themes such as memory, death, dementia, changing perspectives, life, death, love, loss and much more, all touched on over a scant 62-minute running time. Relentlessly insightful, one can’t help but think how much more can be gained from multiple viewings. See more Leaburn O 11/27/2024 A surprisingly deep stick man contemplates his existence. It really is worth an hour of anyone’s time. Watched on BiliBili. See more Matias S 09/11/2024 I saw this movie like 2 days ago after hearing all sorts of praise about it. And…this movie is a masterpiece, and it might be a top 10 if not top five movie. It’s so deep, emotional, creepy, etc. if you haven’t seen it, you must watch it at least once.
