Owen Gleiberman Entertainment Weekly Rated: C Sep 7, 2011 Full Review Variety Staff Variety Sparky playing, a generally sharp script and bright packaging add up to a neat little winner in the romantic comedy Jack & Sarah, a kind of After Nine Months London style. maria g Amazing, a great drama and comedy in one movie. Richard E Grant should have won an Oscar for his performance in this movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/23/24 Full Review isla s I really enjoyed this film - its a nice feel good film. Perhaps some elements of the plot are a bit unlikely, if you really analyse it a lot but for the most part its pretty believable and it'd be hard not to feel sorry for Jack (played by Richard E Grant). I like that there are quite a few well known British actors/actresses present, including Dame Judi Dench and Sir Ian McKellan, who plays a homeless drunk (some stereotypes may be present but their only lightly poked fun at, nothing especially serious as such). Its obviously a sad watch at the start, when Jack has to face the sad fact that his wife has passed away but it becomes quite light hearted and enjoyable, although thats not to say that Jack actively chooses to forget about what happened and his family are around to ensure that he does good by his new daughter, who he chooses to name after his said late wife, which is quite touching. I liked the witty dialogue and the characterisation - there is some visual based comedy and I liked how Samantha Mathis and Richard E Grant (as Jack and his newly found babysitter, Amy) get on with each other (or, at times, don't) on screen - they come across well on screen. I enjoyed this film as I felt that Jack wasn't actively wanting/meaning to shrug off his fatherly duties and its nice to see examples of fathers (perhaps especially single fathers) who want to do all they can for their children and clearly have a strong, loving connection to them, given some of the less ideal portrayal of fathers as lazy and all the rest of it, in other films, TV shows and the like. The affection both of the aforementioned main characters have towards Sarah is what made this film really work, in my mind. Ok so its undoubtedly a sentimental/cheesy film but sometimes thats no bad thing. For a film of this type, this is definitely one of the better ones I've seen and so I'd happily recommend it. Also, I got it from the recommendation of Cat Davies who had a feature about it in a recent issue of Film Stories magazine. Thanks!. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Thank goodness someone decided to make this. Apart from the miscasting of Judi Dench it works. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Totally underated film. A wonderful ensemble. Just have the box of tissues ready Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Audience Member A bit over acted by Richard E Grant, the rest was okay though. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member An only so-so script is lifted by some genuinely charming and sturdy performances, without which, it's questionable whether it would be as watchable and likable as it is.
