Terry M People mistake the word 'revenge' with PRINCIPLES. There are some lines that just can not be crossed, forgiven when they are... and the principle is that walking away means it will continue happening to yourself AGAIN in the future, and others... because the perpetrator otherwise hasn't/won't learn. There for the lesson(s) of PRINCIPLES is necessary for a FREE SOCIETY to understand there really are SOME LINES that shouldn't be crossed, some respect that should happen. While I don't like the ending, in that two of the people that knowingly lied got away with it, the corrupt land owner bully likely didn't survive two years of hard labor, and likely suffered both a slow death and a loss of ALL HIS WEALTH (if he did survive). And, the corrupt judge got his. Sadly, neither the AG or Governor, or the lying Sheriff got theirs (by the end of the movie), but I'd guess they either significantly changed... or karma found them later in life. Sad they 'mowed down' the Indians... and didn't KEEP THEIR WORD on the initial Amnesty deal (which is exactly what the Crow said would happen). The 'old west' was interestingly not even 150 years ago... and it's wild to see just how far 'we' (as humans, as American's) have come. If the pneumonia, or one of the infections wouldn't have got me, I'm sure a bullet or noose would have back in those days. Survival in the wild west was a challenging thing... thankfully enough of my kin folk made it through. Good movie, strong principle, a whole lot of sad circumstances honed in far too much reality in some areas of the mid to late 1800's. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/06/25 Full Review Audience Member This was a western on a regular basis, I liked it. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member A real sleeper in the genre. John Cusack at his best. One of the greatest westerns ever made that no one's ever heard of. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Audience Member A very disjointed film with some truly uninspired acting (Cusack’s accent comes and goes and he doesn’t have the years ((made in 1999)) to pull off this role.) As a revenge western it is a dud. As a trial movie, it crawls at a snail’s pace. Worse, it has not stood the test of time and its inaccuracies would make a middle school history student roll their eyes. My favorite “blooper” is that they are constantly flying Old Glory, the modern version, with all fifty states (1960). The movie is set before Wyoming has even become a state (1890). More irritating is that the movie is named after the Wyoming state flag (the bison bull with “jack” being an old term for a flag.) So, a movie named after a flag can’t get the American flag right. Just something you’d think someone would notice. But, why let that get in the way of a weekend HBO reenactment? Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/20/19 Full Review Audience Member Very good with moments of greatness. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Great movie. Surprisingly great, since it has gotten no critical notice. The story got me at a gut level. The moral characteristics were only slightly exaggerated. All the characters were inside the confines of realistic probability. I really liked this. Great acting. Great story. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Read all reviews
