Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times It is not a sad film, however. It is a film about a boy lucky enough to discover how he wanted to spend his life, and to spend it that way. Audience Member My second Varda's entry (after CLEO FROM 5 TO 7 1962, 7/10) is her cinematic eulogy to her late husband, the filmmaker Jacques Demy (1931-1990) after 28 years of marriage, who passed away one year before the film's release, recounts Demy's life from childhood to adolescence in Nantes, re-enacts mostly sketchy episodes of that time from Demy's memoir, particularly during the Occupied France in WWII and Jacquot (Jacques' nickname) 's ever-growing passion towards cinema. keep reading my review on my blog: http://wp.me/p1eXom-1RN Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review Audience Member An authentic account for the young Jacques Demy's route to director. An endearing record of a film fanatic and the roots of his inspirations. Shot innovatively with the clips of Demy's films, childhood memory and the footage of Demy himself, we are brought to the familiar scenes once again, and begin to realize and appreciate his determination and creativity. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Saw this as part of an Austin Film Society screening of films by Agnes Varda, the wife of French directory Jacques Demy. The film is a biography and partial documentary of Jacques Demy's childhood in 30's and 40's France and his growing interests in becoming a film director. Some problems in pacing and editing perhaps detracted from the film but nonetheless the story was quite engaging. Although the editing did become a bit redundant, it was interesting to see many of the juxtapositions of specific childhood memories and how these memories were shown in his later works including "Lola" and "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg." I also liked the main storyline with Jacque's budding interests in film starting with his first animated films and his first experiences with shooting with a motion picture camera while growing up in Nantes. Jacquot is a precocious youth obsessed with the cinema and eager to break free of his father's orbit (although the old man is far from an ogre). It's a blissful existence, despite the encroachment of the odd Nazi, and one could perhaps level accusations that the movie whitewashes the worst of the era. But, to a kid, it's likely that fantasy would have been uppermost in his mind in relation to reality, so such harping would be churlish. The film includes interviews with Demy (dying of AIDS at the time) and excerpts from his own films including The Umbrellas of Cherbourg . Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Mike M Though actuality is in monochrome and any kind of escapist fiction (school plays, Punch and Judy shows, etc.) in colour throughout, the two forms are joined in matrimony by a bravura editing conceit oddly reminiscent, two decades on, of those special DVD features that allow viewers to watch hidden or deleted scenes during the feature proper by pushing the appropriate button. With clips from Demy's features inserted between the filmed memories, the technique would be jolting (alienating, even) were these extracts not so seamlessly integrated; real care and effort has been taken to return to the original exteriors wherever possible, and there are half a dozen of the most gorgeous, seductive match cuts in all cinema. The tangled roots of a cherry blossom tree poking through a crack in the Demys' yard gives way to strands of hair on Jacques the elder's head; Jacquot turning the crank on his beloved new camera chimes with his mother, behind him (as ever), grinding coffee beans. Varda is attempting to put on screen every fibre of her beloved's being, not out of any morbid fear of losing him, rather to connect the dots between one Jacques Demy and another, and - in doing so - to celebrate a life, in word and image and song. One of the few memoir-movies, or memorial-movies, that really does merit the description lyrical. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/21/10 Full Review Read all reviews
